there's a PS plugin (but it's also available as a standalone app) called akvis sketch (http://akvis.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). It also works in batch mode for lots of pictures.

My advice: if you can't afford the SSD _don't_ try out a laptop with an SSD!
