I'm interested in morphing the attached images between each other going from the brushed border to the whole screen filled. I wondered if there would be a typical way of doing this other than drawing frame by frame. I tried using the drawing recorder but this won't animate evenly into the middle.

Have a try with the Optical Flow FX. Works best in reverse, define the end position first, then distort to start position. Reverse frames later.
It's also possible to combine several techniques, like using the Drawing Recorder, plus something else covering the middle.
Don't get yourself trapped by the idea everthing must be achieved in one go with just one tool.
