Proxy

Post by A1 »

I am working on a 600+ frames scene. (one piece of music)
I work on segments that can not be divided into different scenes because they kind of melt into eachother.
Here is the problem: When i try different approaches i switch layers on and off, move back and forth between a whole bunch of layers while animating.
Every time i do this with a long layer, the proxy has to recalculate that layer. (i wait more than i work) I could offcourse divide every layer into small segments, but i'm already having difficulty finding my correct layers back.

Is there any workaround that anybody knows off?

Or is there a way to have the proxy only re-calculate what is between the mark in - mark out settings, that would really save me some time and let me keep the drive while working.

If it would be better to post this in the feature request section please let me know!!

Thanks for reading!!

Have you try to use an other proxy mode like "real time" ?
RMB on the proxy bar and then select "real time" in the first pop-up. This mode does not recompute all frames since there is no proxy.

yes i have,
but real time does not play very well. Not real time i guess.
The play all button is checked.

In real time mode:
If you check the "Play All" box, TVP Animation will play all frames. In order to be able to play them all, it will decrease the frame rate in function of the speed of your Hard Disk.
If the "Play Button" is not check, TVP Animation will play the animation with the good frame rate but it will not display all frames. This depends on the speed of your Hard Disk.

In Proxy mode, TVP Animation will recompute the frames each time you modify them. It recomputes only the frames that have been modified. If the layer you hide is as long as the scene so the proxy will be completely recompute.

In Render mode TVP Animation will render the scene when you hit the Play Button. So here TVP Animation compute only once the scene.

Maybe the Render mode can be useful for you in order to not waste your time waiting each time you hide or display a layer?

I think if i use the render mode it would resolve the problem of recomputing,
but if i then make a correction in my animation, i would have to rerender the entire 600 frames wich would leave me with a similar problem.

I made a graphical notation (animation) of the music accents on one layer.
This is a layer i refer to all the time bacause it is my timing. Each action segment is only a couple of seconds long and sometimes contains 5 characters interacting along with background and other elements.Since i have about 40 seconds or so the layers add up significantly.
On top of that i work very intuitively (the BIG bonus tvpaint makes possible)
read: i make a mess.
I guess the way i work really pushes the limits  :D

I could offcourse for every segment i work on, split the reference layer for that segment and hide the rest, and then join them again after animating the segment, i guess that is my best option for now.
(Why didn't i think of that before)

But if there was just one checkerbox next to the proxy: "recompute marked space only", i could make a mess and not lose much time doing so.

It just gets very tricky with a lot of layers and a lot of animated frames.
It would be nice to have some management tools available for bigassmessedupcrazylayered scenes.
Perhaps something for the future.
cheers!
