What video WILL import into TVP?
Re: What video WILL import into TVP?
Well first, I think that you confuse the video container (mp4, mov, mkv, flv, avi) and the video codec (DivX, Sorenson, H.263, H.264...).
You might want to read this article : https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/all-you-n ... mpression/
Secondly, we (as TVPaint) should most probably update the open-source component, which deals with the video formats. This could be done soon (I hope).

Re: What video WILL import into TVP?
Thanks Xavier
That's correct, I was conflating the two of them in my posts, though I know enough about it to say that Sorenson uses typical and even atypical codecs as well as the containers you and I have mentioned (and many more). From what I can tell it offers common default settings in each of a great many combinations, and all of them appear to enable adjustment of every setting offered by each codec and container. (I don't think Sorenson offers a codec of its own though. If so, I've never used it.) In any case, I'm using presets for different containers, all of them using - as far as I understand - standards typical across the industry. Still there's much for me to learn here, and I'm looking into it.
Another element is colour space. I've tried both rec 709 and RGB without import success importing to TVP.
I have a vague recollection that a soundless clip can sometimes create import issues.
The number of variables here is large.

Does this mean we don't expect TVP to import a broad range of standard codec/container combinations at this time? If this is the case, a) is there a list of the useable ones? and b) are there at least one or two we know are fool proof?

Re: What video WILL import into TVP?
Definitely !
Please give me a little time to investigate further. As a first thought I would say that the less codecs you use, the less error you may encounter. So I suggest you to try without sound.
If you could provide some samples of videos you're trying to import, it could help

I can. How do I upload or send them? They're only about 4 MB.

Re: What video WILL import into TVP?
The clips are only a few megs each - ie postable size, I think - but I can't see a button for posting a video clip on a forum reply. Nor an email address to get them to TVP support.

You're right, TVPaint doesn't provide their emails publicly. Plus I'm not from support.

I can't see a button for posting a video clip on a forum reply.
Just use the button that says "Attachments > Add Files" to upload a video file.
See attached video I uploaded as test.

Thanks
Attached are two files which open in WMP and VLC, but won't import into my installation of TVP. If others can import them, there's something wrong with my installation.

Re: What video WILL import into TVP?
Curioser and curioser. Thanks ST and PF.
Maybe it has something to do with the codec configuration on my machines; though - as you point out - if they're mentioned on the import file type list then they should be available.
I notice that the precise extension names aren't in fact on my importer. It lists 'mpeg' and "Quicktime", but not '.mp4' or ".mov" . I have thought that was sufficient to show that the codecs were available, but maybe not. I'm going to look into this, but I'm cautious about installing a bunch of unnecessary codecs as I have encountered confusion with codec pacs in the past related to nle exporter requirements.
EDIT: Actually it does list .mov as an installed codec available in the TVP import window... But not mp4.
I haven't been able to make sense of instructions about investigating what codecs are installed. They lead to a system info VideCodecs window with a list of .dll files without any recognizable codec names.
But the fact that these files play in WMP indicates that those codecs are installed. For some reason my TVP installations (neither of them) have access to the codecs.
I think this is one for TVP support. Here's hoping Xavier is a link to that.

Re: What video WILL import into TVP?
Both of the files you uploaded Elevation_h264_6000kbs_1080p.mov and Elevation_YouTube_1080p.mp4 loaded into TVPaint 11.0.8 on my end.
I noticed both sample files are a still image (?) . There is not any movement , although there are individual frames which imported into TVPaint
Are the original files a non-moving image ?

It's 24fps video of a church facade; the leaves on the leftmost trees should be rustling a bit in the wind.

Yes, I see that now. The leaves are moving slightly. I just wanted to be sure that the video had imported correctly.
