could anyone explain how to scroll a background continuously?
and, how to open layers of two projects in the timeline at the same time.

welcome harriet ,

make a BG "tilable", f.i, for an horiz. pan, use the pan tool in warp mode, and paint it so the left side join the right side without any break,
then (fx Stack) keyframe it with "fill" option checked ON.

To have a moving backgound:

1. create the image for the background:
It needs to bigger than the animation project. How much movement you want, and how quickly, should determine how large the background image should be. For now, let's say that you want you animation 500x500 pixels. Make a bakground, say, 500px high and 1000px wide. Draw you background image. Save your background image, give it a name.

2. Create a new project, size 500x500.

3. Open the FX panel, and choose Add FX>Motion>KeyFramer. Select the Render tab. In the Source tab select Project list> and then your backround project file.

4. You should now see a your background image in your project. Notice it is placed at 100%, so it is bigger than the current project size. Grab the center of it and drag it to the side, so what you'll see in the animation are should be the beginning of the scroll.

5. since you're interested in a scroll, the only parameter to be changed here is the X axis values. Make sure the cursor in the Timeline Panel is at the first frame, select the Position tab in the Keyframer Panel, and click on the C button next to the topmost X value. It should light on. This means you've just placed a keyframe for the position X value at the current frame. Select the last frame in the Timline Panel. Drage the center of the background image to it's other end of the scroll, and the keyframe should be added automatically (it should be lit).

5. Now you've set a keyframe at the first frame, and a keyframe at the last. If you drag the cursor you should see the in-between states of the scroll. Now you have to apply the move: select all frames in the timeline (double click the layer area under the timeline), it should all be selected with yellow. Hit the Apply Now button at the FX Panel. Now it shold apply the scroll.

As for your second question, I didn't understand it

zig, you beat me to it!
And I think you read her question better than mine, because I thought she was asking about a normal panning background...

nah ... I just thought a miss would be probably less rude by adding 2-3 words in a short form to introduce herself,
but I must be wrong, ... feel like an old-manner educated man, still living in the previous century. :)
probably a matter of generation ...

Hi there,
The ' fill' check and wrap was what I needed. Thanks a lot. I'm sorry for not introducing. I'm not used to forums and a newcomer in animation.
I tried the tutorial on the mirage website with a car and a scrolling background, but missed something.
My second question also has to do with this tutorial: In this tutorial there is first a projectwindow with a car. Next you have to create a new project for the background. If you open this new project, the layer with the car becomes invisible. How do i get the two together in one layer stack?
thanks a lot for your answer, greetings miss harriet

oh, I see now :
in your target project, create a new animlayer as long as your scene duration,
then fx-stack/keyframe the background project in this new layer,
(read again malcooning's answer for more details),
you will need to set at least 2 keys (start and end) for the BG panning mvt,
select all frames + apply.

glad my answer was not in vein!

Zig, I like old school manners. I think they exist, not because of manners necessarily, but because of certain romantic rhetorics. The world makes a constant shift from romantic into practic, and I hate that, because it makes everything fast and immediate, the kind that stresses me up. If it wasn't for the older days, we'd never have things like appetizers and deserts!
I too belong to the old school.

hello :)
i am trying to do a background pan and found this very helpful! :) until i had to "drag the bg-image by the center to start from the beginning" - how do i do that? which tool do i use? because i get the middle of the image in the thumbnail, and tried to move it and i just couldnt really figure out how to do it. i tried to use those moving (and maybe also cutting??) tools, and it moved it - but the image was cut out of the whole image - like if the image shown in the small project was the only thing left of the background. and i assume i'll have to move it in the "viewport" of the project - the screen, or what to call it - right?
maybe i missed a tool somewhere.. it's like my eyes went blind, i can't find it anywhere.
thanks!
