TVPAINT 11.5.3 NEXT INSTANCE problem
TVPAINT 11.5.3 NEXT INSTANCE problem
Hi !
The hotkey I am using the most, is probably the ones that "go to previous/next instance" in order to Flip my animation.
Now I have a problem when I want to animate in straight, I remember it wasn't present in one of the previous version (I installed all new version when I bought a new PC)
The problem is that when I am on the LAST instance, I need it to go "over" it so I can draw directly on the EMPTY place which would create an instance for me, otherwise I have to use another hotkey or press the arrow button OR with my mouse ...very disturbing that this has changed.
Could you let me know if there is a FIX ?
Thanks !

Have you checked "auto break instance" on that layer?

Re: TVPAINT 11.5.3 NEXT INSTANCE problem
i believe it's this issue that OP is having.
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=14734
it's messed with my workflow too, sad to see the old functionality is not being considered as an option.

You're right, it's the same issue, and they don't plan on reverting it... Why not give options since many people already have a workflow ?ChristopherC wrote: ↑08 Feb 2022, 11:46 i believe it's this issue that OP is having.

Re: TVPAINT 11.5.3 NEXT INSTANCE problem
You need to assign other functions to your left/right arrow keys. Open the shortcut panel :jmew1989 wrote: ↑06 Feb 2022, 18:14 Hi !

- hit left, change the assigned function to "Layer: Go left"
- hit right, change the assigned function to "Layer: Go right"
Actually they're the default functions for new configurations... but given you reused your config, your keymap was preserved.
Re: TVPAINT 11.5.3 NEXT INSTANCE problem
Woah, reading the answer in the the other thread linked here is quite frustrating and honestly confusing.
So if I understand correctly the reason for changing the old functionality was that "next/prev instance" shortcut was only ever meant to go between instances, and the reason why they fixed the behavior where the playhead could go beyond the last instance was that the "empty" frame after the final instance doesn't technically count as an instance.
This new, changed functionality seems overthought and overengineered.
Ultimately the main characteristic of "next/prev instance" is to move horizontally on the timeline; to go left and right just like "go left/right". From an user point of view the difference between these two commands is that "next instance" doesn't care about exposure rates (for as long as there's exposures to be considered), and "go right" does. To kill this moving left/right -behavior when the playhead has reached the final instance makes very little intuitive sense because from an user end the semantics of what constitutes as an instance and what doesn't was never the point of using the command. The point of the commands was to be able to navigate through the timeline with ease.
What exactly is the practical application of not allowing the playhead to move beyond the final instance anyways? To protect the user from accidentally inputting an extra "next instance" and landing on empty space in the timeline? Were there actual complaints about the playhead moving beyond the final instance? Because this feels like someone saw a logic failure between a features functionality and its naming, and fixed the functionality (rather than the naming) without questioning how it alters the most basic animation workflow within the program.
Also not to mention that this fix is broken. If the final instance of a layer has the exposure rate of 1, then pressing "next instance" wont allow the playhead to move beyond it like intended. However, if the final instance of layer has the exposure rate of 2 or greater, the playhead happily skips beyond the final instance like it used to. (I'm on 11.5.3 if that matters)
Of course the solution of using "go left/right" isn't the end of the world, but it's frustrating that something that I've been able to do for years with one button, moving right on the timeline through my poses, now has to be done with two buttons depending on context. It's also frustrating that assuming I have an animation animated on ones, divided to multiple layers, I can't use my primary navigation buttons (next/prev instance) to step through the entire thing, if I have a layer selected which doesn't have instances running through the entire length of the clip.

Re: TVPAINT 11.5.3 NEXT INSTANCE problem
OK, this is the behaviour I'm used to from 10:
- there's one pair of commands for "previous/next instance", in absence of instances it goes previous/next frame and advances/decreases 1 frame in instanceless territories.
- there's another pair of commands for "previous/next frame" which outside of instances and exposure advances/drereases 1 frame as well.
I've set the first pair to arrow left/right and the second pair to shift-arrow left/right.
This works in 11.0.3 as well (sorry, I'm not up to date because I still prefer 10, for other reasons, will explain some day). The reason given in that other thread for changing this ("not outside the layer where there are no instances yet") ignores our workflow, which, it seems, is quite common: go from instance to instance to empty frame and draw, without changing the key. Repeated hammering on the same key is quite common, I even use it to count the distance in frames to my next drawing.
Not allowing this would be like locking the drawer with animation paper so you need to turn the key each time you want to add a new drawing. The other reason given, "in some situations it led to negative images", should be easily being caught in programming, like adding a check "are we in frame 1" when triggered to go left before moving playhead.

Maybe I made a mistake. We'll discuss that with the team.masiyooo wrote: ↑09 Feb 2022, 23:49 Woah, reading the answer in the the other thread linked here is quite frustrating and honestly confusing.

And this is why the TVPaint team is so great. Not many developers would ever say this. Kudos.Maybe I made a mistake.

+1
I had to make all kind of complicated workarounds to get the old structure back. And it still goed wrong all the time...
