Wacom driver and Hover right click problems on Mac and Windows (Sub-Pixel and other issues)
Wacom driver and Hover right click problems on Mac and Windows (Sub-Pixel and other issues)
Dear TVPainters who use Wacom hardware.
I know for a fact that I am not alone in this. For several years me and other animators have to keep working on older Wacom drivers because whatever they did with their updates is not working as expected.
With all their newer drivers I am having multiple issues, mainly with the stylus pen, both on Windows and Mac. Some recent troubleshooting proved, that on Windows problems start when using Sub-Pixel. On Mac the trouble starts when using newer Wacom drivers.
Some of those problems were described long time ago in the following threads:
viewtopic.php?t=15059&hilit=wacom
viewtopic.php?p=125039#p125039
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5621
(there are probably more)
It was reported to Wacom already many times before, but with no results. I've just raised the issue again with their support and of course I am getting the standard answers like "reinstall your driver", "clean your system", etc. Which of course has no effect.
As I understand there is something between TVPaint and Wacom architecture that don't match, but this is clearly not just a TVPaint issue, because I am getting similar problems in Storyboarder (it also utilizes right-click for erasing).
I am trying to gather a ticket for Wacom, to make them understand that this is a major global problem and not my personal case. Maybe I am too optimistic, but if I gather enough evidence, maybe they will finally at least try investigating.
So I am asking all the fellow colleagues - could you share which Wacom driver work for you on what system and whether you are utilizing or not the right-click function. Thanks!
(I will record a video soon to describe the problems more clearly)

Re: Wacom driver post 6.3.28-3 behavior ticket initiative
Yes, I've had this same issue because I am using older Wacom hardware (Cintiq 21ux 2nd Gen , and Intuos Pro 5). The driver which works for me is 6.3.38-3 . I'm running MacOS Monterey 12.4.
I do use the right-click function.
-------
Soom, are you using driver 6.3.28-3 as in the title of your post or driver 6.3.38-3 ?

Re: Wacom driver and Hover right click problems on Mac and Windows (Sub-Pixel and other issues)
UPDATE:
Ok, after a bit of troubleshooting I discovered that on Windows my main problem is Sub-Pixel: it just prevents me from using any recent Wacom driver as intended - hover-click stops working. With Sub-Pixel disabled everything is Ok, besides the little problem that when hover-right-clicking I still get erased lines, but that's a minor issue - I got used to that.
On a Mac (it's the same machine with NVidia card and 2 displays) the last Wacom driver that works for me is 6.3.37-3. If I update it to any later driver, when I hover-right-click, I get a 100 percent size/power erased lines. This is not workable.
Here are 2 videos to compare these issues. Sorry if they are a bit long - I have realized that I speak slower than I thought! :

The only way I was able to get that hover erasing problem to go away was to uncheck Hover Click in the Wacom Eraser Options.

We have been aware of this issue for a couple of months, and we also noticed that updating the Wacom driver had some effect(s) on MacOS.D.T. Nethery wrote: ↑20 Jul 2022, 00:50

However, as astonishing as it may seem: on our Mac computers, the pressure issue can hardly be reproduced. We have a limited number of machines, too... the Apple ecosystem evolves quickly and not every users stay up to date, so we try to ensure backward-compatibility.

Re: Wacom driver and Hover right click problems on Mac and Windows (Sub-Pixel and other issues)
I'm on Mac, running the latest Wacom driver / Mac OS, I've had the same behaviours of the hover-right click to erase. I've found that instead of having opacity set to constant, setting it to pressure with the curve profile like this is a work-around to stop hover click from erasing things:
and similarly i use something like this if the pressure curve begins anywhere above 0:
I've also found that with even this method, if you press the pen down once while hover clicking to begin to erase, then lifting the pen up without releasing right click, the pen will continue to erase whilst hovering.

Re: Wacom driver and Hover right click problems on Mac and Windows (Sub-Pixel and other issues)
Hi Christopher, the Wacom setting that D.T. Nethery pointed out sounded to us like an explanation. Yet it seems Wacom seemed to set "Hover Click" by default, so it's a bit annoying to us. But at least, we have a better understanding regarding this unexplained behaviour in TVPaint. We need to get in touch with Wacom to handle the "Hover Click" properly.D.T. Re: Wacom driver and Hover right click problems on Mac and Windows (Sub-Pixel and other issues)
Well, that's exactly not an option for me because I am using the Hover-Click all the time. I don't mind the little minimum pressure lines, but I cannot work if it's erasing at 100% force all the time that happens on Mac with the later driver.D.T. I myself am working on an Intel machine, but the thing is that I am going to upgrade it the latest OS probably soon and I am afraid that older drivers will not work anymore...

If it's any help to you , I'm running MacOS 12.4 Monterey on a 2018 Mac Mini (Intel) using older Wacom driver 6.3.38-3 (with a Wacom Cintiq 21UX 2nd Gen.)
These specs:

,Wacom Intuos Pro 5 , Wacom driver version 6.3.39-1
Re: Wacom driver and Hover right click problems on Mac and Windows (Sub-Pixel and other issues)
The latest Wacom drivers supports from Mojave to Monterey : It'd be fun to try on a Mac M1 or M2

Re: Wacom driver and Hover right click problems on Mac and Windows (Sub-Pixel and other issues)
Except that driver 6.3.46-1 does not support all older Wacom hardware, so if you are like me, trying to squeeze a few more years out of a 12 year old Wacom Cintiq 21UX, the end-of-the-line is driver 6.3.38-3 ... or maybe driver 6.3.40-2 if you don't use Express Keys , because a Known Issue for driver 6.3.40-2 is "When activating a keystroke assigned to a button (holding down an ExpressKey or pen button assigned to activate the Option key, for example), the keystroke improperly releases, even when you continue to hold down the ExpressKey or pen button." and also: "Straight line segments are present at the start of a stroke in some applications."
However, the release notes for driver 6.3.46-1 says that it does support Wacom Cintiq 22 , which is the model that Soom lists in his profile , so he should be ok with driver 6.3.46-1 .

The only thing I can tell is : the latest Wacom driver works on a Mac M1 and TVPaint (Wibu). But if your drawing device is not supported anymore by Wacom, then it becomes a new experience !
If you prefer to keep your old drawing device, then maybe you could look for a refurbished Apple computer on Intel ?
