new ERNEST and CÉLESTINE movie made with TVPaint

Post by D.T. Nethery »

"ERNEST ET CÉLESTINE: LE VOYAGE EN CHARABIE" (2022) is a sequel to the film "ERNEST ET CÉLESTINE" (2012)

This interview with Jean-Christophe Roger, co-director of the film with Julien Cheng, mentions they used TVPaint.

"we looked for a technique that would allow us to have such a subtle and light rendering, but which would be simpler in its production. We worked with the TVPaint software which allows us to keep the line of the draftsman and we defined a very precise style."

Is that really animated with 3D characters? I wouldn't have guessed, it looks like genuine 2D for me. (And I think it's beautiful.)

The new film is 2D.

The 3D that Jean-Christophe Roger talks about is in reference to "Ernest and Célestine: The Collection", a tv series that ran from 2017-2021. Time and budgetary constraints led them to using 3D for the series, but the filmmakers wanted to return to 2D for the new feature film and chose TVPaint as the software to use for the production.
