The cable never bothered me, but thanks for the link; reading the comments I found what I had already suspected: my nibs wear out like crazy and it's due to the rougher surface of the Wacom 4. ARGH! Why can't Wacom finally understand that their tablets should come with interchangeable overlay sheets! First, the 3 came with interchangeable layers but you could buy only ONE KIND; now they just made the rough one a permanent overlay. I guess they like the idea of us becoming frequent nib buyers.

Could be. My very first wacom pen is still useable with its first nib, after 12 yrs! But my cintiq needed a new one after 2 years. Fortunately I found the package with 3 spare ones ...

With the Wacom 4 I need a new one every few weeks, but I've bought so many pens over the years that I have a few extra bags of spare nibs.

Our Cintiqs at school are chained with the tables, but not the pens. Fortunately no pen was stolen till now.

I had my own special experience with those nibs during the making of my film. After a view weeks I got some ugly scratches on the surface. After that I started to have a closer look at the nibs every day to be sure they are not sharp. Later I recognised that the scratches on the screens sharpens the nibs and the sharp nibs added new scratches to the surface. After my film was finished the only way to get out of this dilemma was to exchange the screen surface.

Wrong conclusion you made - this looks like an interesting abstract painting, like some early black and white Phillip Guston - you should go to some Berlin gallery owner and in no time you will be a rich man. ( )

I am very familiar with those scratches -- I had to by a whole back-supply of overheads at $ 35 a sheet (yikes!@#$). Now, as soon as my nib signals a scratchy sensation I pluck it out and replace.

Nib wear is the No.1 drawback of the intuos4. Inuos3 was such a good product, they shouldn't have changed that. I believe Wacom have been listening to user requests for rougher surface, but thought it could overlook the nib wear. the main problem is that the nib, even if worn, is becoming sharp and uneven, which causes some drawing in certain directions to scratch the surface, giving an eeky feeling to the drawing experience, and a scratch to the surface of the tablet. The scratches can be wiped with water actually, but the nib's life is short. I tried the white nibs from the Intuos3 pen and they seem slightly more sturdy than the black nibs.

I wouldn't have replaced my intuos3 actually had it not just suddenly died on me in the middle of a project. Te new features of the inuos4 are good and welcome, but I find myself mainly using the drawing surface and that's it. I find the buttons on it a bit too hard to press, and this tires my fingers, especially if I want to use the buttons as modifiers (i.e Alt, Ctrl etc), which means I still keep my hand on the trusty keyboard. Also, although the ring is quite nice, I find it not so helpful with moving the animation playhead back and forth, because it seems to move in it's own speed, which is not corresponding with the speed I slide my finger on it. It would have been useful if it moved in the same responsivity as when I use my mouse to drag the playhead.

All in all, I there's more to improve in the intuos4 than I felt there was in the intuos3.

P.S - how cheap can you get new nibs up there in the states?

Actually it does wear out in just a couple of weeks, not several -- but I have also noticed that the white ones last longer. I haven't yet had to buy extra nibs, I have so many little packets and this also because of Sandra who never seems to wear them out. BTW, have you noticed that you can adjust the speed of each individual control in the Touch Ring tab of the Wacom software?

yes. but it doesn't help.
do your ring wheel give you instant feedback to your finger?
can you use it like a flip book (meaning you can preview the animation slow and FAST)?
