How to re-assign Alt ( Zoom : Pan, Zoom : In/Out ) ?

Post by nicolae »

I am using all the Numeric Pad keys for my own keyboard shortcuts so that I can press them with my left hand, without taking my eyes of the screen.
The Alt key, used a lot ( large drawings ) is not easy to press without quickly looking at it.

So : Is it possible to re-assing Alt to, let's say, 0 (NumZero) ?

Thanks.

I re-maped RightAlt to NumZero with TradeKey2.

I programmed my Wacom tablet's first button from the bottom to Alt. BTW, I also work the way you do, with my left hand on the numbers pad. For that reason I got a keyboard that lets me break off the numbers pad; it's a great desk top spacesaver. Svengali also made a really cool toggle switch with which you can toggle between any pen (or CP button) you wish and your eraser, which you can set to any size and attributes you wish.

I don't use the zoom, instead I assigned two commands: Actual pixels, and Fit in Window, to two keys.

I just discovered this hardware niche, you can buy them also separately, there are literally dozens of models
even a horizontal one that can be very efficiently placed.

does anyone have experience with any of these?

I never heard of those buts this is the one we use:

EDIT: Interesting; further investigating your link I came upon this page which carries a number of Wacom 4 adds. Is this because anmators use those number pads or is it because Google knows I'm an animator?

Instead of a detachable numeric keypad, I bought a Nostromo Speedpad for 15 bucks on eBay. It has a mouse wheel for navigating the timeline, and a ton of assignable keys. Comfortable, simple and inexpensive.
I have a pretty developed system managing the hotkeys with a .tvpx panel.
Highly recommended as a left-hand keyboard replacement for TVP!
Also, GlovePIE is a good freeware hotkey assigning program.

Quoi l'enfer...

A real geek's stuff, in my opinion. But it seems to be done for right-handed... or maybe I don't understand how you hold that thing

Well - I'm left handed and I use one of these:

It's a Contour Design ShuttlePRO. You can pick them up new for about £60 - but I got mine second hand from eBay for less than half that. For animation, or any timeline based editing, they are excellent, and VERY flexible when it comes to customisation.

I use the Shuttle Pro 2 too; both for Vegas and TVPaint. I highly recommend this one as well; simple and not overblown.

Yes, and even though mine is second hand, I contacted customer support, and they happily sent me out a new sheet of the labels that fit under the nine see though plastic buttons at the top. Which was nice of them.

The Nostromo does look embarrassingly geeky, yes. It's the orange, I think. Also, when tools start to look too "adapted" to the human body, people start getting uncomfortable...
I have the ShuttleXpress, but I think I should have gone for the Pro, as the Xpress can't do combinations, so you can't assign one key to ctrl, one to alt, and one to shift, as I do with the Nostromo.
Also, I found the correlation between the mechanical steps of the XPress wheel and the signal of "mouse wheel up" or "mouse wheel down" to be imprecise (sometimes it requires two mechanical steps to send a single wheel movement command). It's not perfect on the Nostromo, either... The most precise mechanical mouse wheel I've discovered is on a cheapo Dell mouse from about 1999. I've removed the ball (that's how old it is) so it's not moving the cursor about, and use it just for "layer->go right" and "layer->go left".
