paint in from other instance

Post by hilere »

It would be interesting to copy parts of a drawing from an earlier (or later) instance, just by painting over the chosen lines.
Say you have a drawing visible through your light table. You just paint over the lines you need for the new drawing to copy them in the current instance. Very handy especially for storyboarding.
I know it is possible to go to the drawing, select, copy, paste....but this new way of working is much faster and much more intuitive.
Unless it already exists of course, and I didn't find it yet (as it is most of the time).

Use the spare image and the merge painting mode.

Go to the 'source' frame, hit Shift-J (Copy to spare). This will copy this frame to the 'spare' buffer, which isn't part of the project.
go to the 'destination' frame, select the 'Merge' mode [F6], and draw over what you want to transfer to the current frame.
You can't see the 'spare' per-se, but if it is one of the previous frames, the lighttable will help you.

The 'Panto' mode also has a 'Previous image' as source, if you always 'transfer' from the previous frame, this will be faster because you can skip the 'Copy yo spare' step.
Quicktime is DEAD. Get over it and move on !

It already exists :

-make your drawing
-create a new instance
-activate the light table
-take a drawing tool and change the color mode into "Panto" instead of "Color"
-then open the "shape settings" panel (windows => shape settings or right click on a button in the "main panel")
-in the menu "source", choose "previous"

:D

Edit : Eric was faster ^^

That's a pretty great option I never knew about!
Thanks for asking, Hilere.

I like that, thanks!

Very useful saved as a new brush. Airbrush works best for me, especially when using right-mouse-button erase. Cool

Really great… is there any other goodies like this "papier de brouillon" (spare image) ?

I'm badly missing a few more tutorials (about tips like that and others)…

It would be useful to be able to include a button command that could set the Shape Settings:Source to Previous - I can't find a command to do that... is there one? Or is there a tv_ command that could be used?
