Background Image

Post by Byron »

I wonder if having the option to add an image as a background (in addition the the None/Check/Colour options) would be possible.

Sometimes I like to use a paper texture as a background and it would be nice to have this texture completely independent of layer view or paper view settings - ie: no matter what I have showing or hidden, I can always see my current layer and my paper texture. I've had a poke around, and haven't found a way to implement this - apologies if I missed something! - adding the option to the background colour options would seem like a nice way to do it.

Hm, I'm quite happy with using an image layer as bottom layer. Your idea would only save that one layer - given that it get's complicated just with 10 layers I'd vote much more into a grouping (and collapsing) layers feature.

well, if it's only to preview the paper structure behind your current layer, you can check-on the paper gadget in the Display Settings window.

another "workaround" consist to add in the FX-Stack (without applying it) a Color/Image Source : Source = Paper, Blending Mode = Behind ,
when you want to see the paper in the background, check the FX-Stack Preview gadget On, when you don't, check it Off.

Hmm - the FX Stack idea is interesting - I'll have to check that out, thanks. :)

Slowtiger - the reason I wanted to have my paper image as a background rather than a layer was because I often use the toggle all/current layer visibility key when I'm drawing (it's mapped to a tablet button, that's how much I use it!), and obviously, when I'm on current, my paper texture disappears.

---

Edit - I like to use a paper texture (I don't mean the tiled ones - I mean a large image the size of the current project) as, for me, it feels more natural and nicer to draw with it showing - so the View Paper option isn't what I'm after, as the paper changes with each brush, and I've tried the FX Stack thing, but as you say, this only works for previewing what it looks like, not actually drawing.

I don't get what you mean ...
do you mean you are using several custombrushes with different paper for each one ?

Well, yes - or brushes with different levels of hardness - or brushes with no paper at all. The paper I use as a background image is not the paper I use for my brushes - I want the background paper to remain consistent, and not be linked to the brush paper.

Now i'm really happy with utilizing an picture stratum while bottom part stratum. Your current concept would only conserve that certain stratum -- since this get's difficult simply using 10 tiers I'd political election a lot more into a grouping tiers feature.
