A new project

Post by JoHanna »

Hello there! I would be most grateful and thankful if you’d help me with this question.

Being a newbie and starting to color an enormous amount of clips with TVP animation 9 Pro just makes me wonder if I am making my clips correctly. I want them to have a perfectly fine quality, fine enough for TV and festivals, just in case. Having asked what options to choose when starting a new project I have been given these answers twise:

PAL HD

width 1920 height 1080

framerate 25

Field: progressive

Picking these options just doesn’t seem simple anymore when starting a new project in my version of TVPaint.

I am first asked for a “template”. I don’t even know what “template” means or if it is important or not…What could it be?

Then a “VGA VGA”-question is asked.. Maybe here I should pick something that has to do with “PAL” because I am in Europe…? Any PAL HD options can not be seen..

Width and height and framerate I think can be just filled in like I have been informed before but then there is an “Aspect Ratio” question.. If only I knew what it meaned…?

In the Field question I think I can pick Progressive like I was also told before...?

I am sorry for asking something this stupid again and I sincerely hope that after a couple
of years it would be my turn to help newbies.. Have a great day everyone and thank you!

Forget about PAL and VGA. These are just shortcuts for certain pixel dimensions in this context.

Just choose 1920 x 1080, 25p (the p is for progressive). Aspect ratio must be 1:1. (This means "square pixels").

This is the format you should produce in. Anything else can be done later, if requested, and most likely will be done in PostPro.

this "VGA VGA" field is where we can select some (video and film) format presets, and you're right, the "Pal HD" option should be present in this list, infortunately, we have only its brother, the "US" HD which is basically the same as our europaen, except for the frame-rate, 30fps in the States, 25fps here in Europa, you can find this (american) preset at New Project ... / Project Size (Clic on the gadget where you read "VGA VGA") / DTV / 1080 . then, type 25 instead of 30 in the frame-rate numéric field to "europeanize" it.

Templates are some pre-formated "empty" project, or in other words, some customized project format, you can save/load a "Template" project for your own convenience, and in your case, you can use it to "record" (and "re-use" later) our HD-25fps format for example :
once created your HD project, 1920 x 1080 25fps progressive, square pixel (see above), you can add f.i. an image-layer and drag&drop it under the anim-Layer (at the bottom of the layers stack in the layer panel) , rename it "BG" (for background), ... then in the "File" menu, go to "Save Project as Template ..." and enter "HD-25fps" in the "name" text field, then "OK" (click on [New Project] to confirm).
Next time, when you will want to start with a new HD project, go to "New Project ..." and select in the "Templates" list your own "HD-25fps" which should figure at the bottom of the list. You will get your customized HD project, with the right format, + with your 2 layers, "BG" and "Anim" layers, "ready to go" ! 8)

you're welcome for any new questions ...

Hi again!

I am trying to turn "the US brother" into it's "European one". When doing that I first choose DTV and 1080 and after that I change the frame rate from 30 to 25. When doing that "DTV 1080" on the top of the "New project" box changes into "current project". I mean that I can not see "DTV 1080" anymore if I change the frame rate. Could that be normal?

The aspect ratio thing lets to choose between three alternatives and there is not a "1:1". It does not let me write so eighter.. Instead of that there is the "Square" and when choosing that it says "1.000" in the field.

Trying to create this perfect full HD clip I get:

Current Project
Width 1920
Height 1080
Frame rate 25.000
Aspect Ratio 1.000

May that sound like it should?

Thanks to you and have a good day!

If you want to change the properties of an existing project, you need to choose "Modify Project" from the menu. There you can change everything to your needs, and TVP creates a copy of the open project converted to the new properties.

Don't worry about "Current project", it just means that TVP can't find your specific combination of properties in its list of formats. Always check the numbers!

correct !
now, you may "Save it as Template", for later recalls.

what do you mean?
That's pretty much the standard rate used in most European media.
The other standard would be 30 fps (US and Japan).
anything other than those will bring conformation issues to deal with if you were to screen your work publicly.

It has to do with the difference between PAL and NTSC.
