E=ric2, Hervé, Fabrice and I came back from the festival in Annecy and wow ! It was a very great MIFA this year, indeed ! We met really much more people this year than the others, the demonstrations didn't stop !
It was very exhausting, but it was a good exhaustion =)

Thanks to all persons who came to the booth, talk with us and complimented us about our work. :D

That's a heart-throb of a site, Herve! There's nothing more forlorn than the sight of an unvisited booth at an exhibit; like a lonely political bumper sticker on an empty street. And to study the faces of those visitors is especially delightful; so concentrated and engaged! Congratulations to the success and to think it comes on TVP's 20th Birthday! Happy Birthday, guys!!! :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

That meeting with Kristof was very interesting, he showed and explained us many interesting things about the animator work. =)

He showed us many examples of different xsheets on paper, in order to improve our xsheet in TVPaint.
He also showed videos where you could see animators drawing and animating on paper : in fact the light table is not so used in the animation process. Traditional animators animate by flipping their sheets , without interruption. The light table is finally used for the inbetween and inking process. So it means we probably should increase the "flip" aspect in TVPaint.

And he also showed us some researches for the next Dreamworks movie, but here I cannot say more about.

I'm curious to see what that will do. The digital light table has by now grown far apart from the original light bulb under the glass one and serves the animator in an advanced way. The flipping between two key drawings I have replaced with the rocker switch on the stylus. If the classical animator had the ability to turn the light bulb on and off by lightly tapping the side of his pencil, he would have screamed, EUREKA, NO MORE stupid FLIPPING!!!

Interesting point of view, in particular because you worked for many years on paper before being a full digital animator. Thanks Paul =)

I still often "roll" my drawings in TVP. Especially when inbetweening.
(Or try to, because there is often a "lag" when I use keyboard shorcuts for that. Strangely, that "lag" is significantly less when I use the scroll wheel on the mouse.

I think the distinction between designing the attitude of the movement, typically done in those rough and thick pencil swirls, should be distinguished apart from the filling in of additional key drawings where the rolling of papers come into play. I believe Kristof Serrand was thinking more of the construction of the very first drawings. Because there I understand why he wouldn't want to use too much of the light table. These initial poses should be drawn in clear view with no other drawings interfering; they should be treated as illustrations, literally poses, opposed to fragments of motion. My guess is that this is what he must have been talking about; the first drawings to be worked later into motion. Also one must take into account that with a classical light table one doesn't have the benefit of the transparency control we have. Sometimes a dim underlying image saves a lot of erasing.

@Paul : Yes, Kristof Serrand was thinking about the first rough animations, which are just composed of lines and circles.
