Lag when zoomed in while drawing

Hello, I have a small problem that when I zoom in I have a bit of a lag sometimes while drawing, especially when making slow, precise lines. I don't know if this is a graphic card issue or maybe a disc space issue or something. I tried using my harddisk as a cache disk but it doesn't really seem to solve anything. Does anyone have tips to possibly solve this?

Hello,

No, the problem doesn't come from your graphic card, TVPaint doesn't depend on that element.

The problem may comes from the hard disk (think in defragment it) or maybe you don't have RAM enough. Do you use TVPaint with other software at the same time ? The problem may also come from your tablet, so did you update your tablet's drivers ? And did you update your TVPaint ?
Did you also use a too big line smoothing ?

I have the latest update 9.5, the latest wacom driver for my tablet, and don't run that many programs, besides a webbrowser with some tabs when I'm working in TVpaint. There should be like 9.5 GB free disk space left on the disk that I am using. I looked at the smoothing though and it was set on 2. Not that big but I turned it off and it's going a lot smoother (ironic) now. Thanks Elodie!

Glad to hear it helped to turn off the Smoothing. (although a smoothing factor of "2" should not have caused too much lag)

I find that it depends on the type of brush I'm using. I've noticed that some Custom Brushes will lag more , especially if the brush is large.

A smoothing of 2 means the drawing ALWAYS lags the cursor for 2 position samples.
So if you draw fast the samples may be separated by quite some pixels and the drawing will always lags this size.

This is the principle of smoothing, you need to know where the cursor is going to smooth the path.

I think the main problem is just a slow computer. The lagging problem with lines was solved, but I still have issues with slow rendering and laggyness when working in large projects (2048x 1152). I constantly hear this "popping" windows system sound as well which probably means there's not enough virtual memory. Problem is that this is the only size that I can make decent stuff in (decent line quality). It's really annoying and kind of demotivates me a lot because when you're constantly delayed by lag you just build up a lot of frustration . But maybe I should try working on my attitude towards it, train myself to be more patient or something.

What makes you say this? Could you show us an image? I've made a feature film that I've seen exploded upon some of the largest screens in the world, including an Imax once, and my lines always maintained the exact same quality I was accustomed to seeing on my computer's monitor -- and my project was 1080p. The only time I've needed a larger image was for moving backgrounds, but nothing had ever slowed down for me in the drawing stage.
