Scanning Issues

Post by Benjamin Sanders »

Hello

I'm testing out the trial version TVP Pro at the moment and have run into a little issue with getting my scanner to work in the software, which is something I was hoping someone here might be able to help me resolve, as it would be great to be able to scan directly into the software.

I'm running OS X Lion with an Epson GT-20000 scanner. Before I upgraded to Lion the scanner would use Epson's own TWAIN drivers/software but since the upgrade it now seems to use Apple's built in ICA drivers for the scanner model. Just scanning from the desktop using these built in drivers and the Lion scanning interface seems to work fine. However when I try to scan directly into TVP I run into troubles.

After I go to File > ICA > Acquire in TVP I'm presented with a 'Select a camera or scanner' window, and my scanner is pictured and listed there. So it's recognised which is good. Alas when I select it a new window opens which is exactly the same in layout and proportion as the Lion scanning interface window only it's blank save for a big grey lozenge on the left hand pane (where the scan preview would appear) which says 'Scanner not available'. And thus I am defeated.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the new drivers, but that doesn't seem to help. The scanner still works perfectly in the native OS X Lion scanning software interface, but that very same interface still says the scanner is unavailable when I try to access it from TVP.

Any ideas on how to get these two bits of software talking to each other properly would be greatly appreciated.

I've experienced similar problems scanning directly into TVP, so my workaround is to just scan all my drawings using the Epson Scan interface , save drawings as jpgs or pngs in a folder (with appropriate naming sequence , such as : A_0001.png, A_0002.png , A_0003.png, A_0004.png, etc. ) then import the entire image sequence into a TVP layer. (drag and drop the first image file -- A_0001.png -- to an open TVP project and the import window will open up and you can import the entire image sequence) .

The workaround is not cumbersome, but hopefully the Mac Twain scanning bug in TVP will be fixed sometime soon.

Hey thanks for the reply.

I figured that might be the best workaround for the time being. Relating to which, how do I then adjust the scan size to my project (say 1080p etc) as at the moment in the Import Footage dialog the project is readjusting itself to the scanned paper size, rather than the other way around, even if I select 1080p in the Convert Footage to drop down menu.

1.) your TVP Project size is 1920 x 1080 .

2.) But your original scans are larger than 1920 x 1080 (so let's say your scans are oversized at something like 2205 x 1240)

3.) When you import the scans into TVP using the Import Footage window the project readjusts itself to the larger scanned paper size (2205 x 1240 in my imagined example) instead of coming in at your desired project size 1920 x 1080 .

Is that the case ?

It sounds like in the Import Footage you are bringing the scans in as a Project instead of bringing them in as a Layer of the existing project.

Make sure that you have the Import Footage set to Layer.
