He's one of the best of new animation filmmakers around.

Interesting but there have been over the decades so many animated films made this way; the timeline of something where the something just repeats itself so I waited how it's going to end because no one knows how to come up with an ending for these merry-go-round synopsis, and he used the cop out of cop outs: it was just a dream. I say interesting because the 3D/2D technology was pleasant to watch, actually.

I think similarly to you in the respect of how the short ends. But I'm into it for it's contemplative dimension. It's not a film that stays with me emotionally, yet it brings a certain amount of surprising pleasantness which I so miss in films these days.
As for technique, I think there is no actual 3D in here. I believe it is drawn entirely in Flash and composited to feel 3D, so more like pseudo-3D.
the guy's talent is in keeping the focus in the content and not in technique.
