Google a picture

Post by Paul Fierlinger »

I just discovered this: Have you ever downloaded a picture from the Internet and later wished you knew where you got it from? Now I discovered that you can take any picture and move it towards your opened Google header and a box will appear saying place picture here and almost instantly the source page where the picture came from opens. It’s amazing. If you try to fool Google and drag a picture you made yourself it’ll find a bunch of pictures that look like it.

I use reference pictures all the time and so often it happens that I get second thoughts about making the mistake of not downloading one or two more pictures that still linger in my memory but would never be able to tell where I got the first one from anymore. I was so thrilled when I discovered this.

Drag a file to the search box on the Google Images search page:

Yes… fun !
(but … my feeling is that the search engine is based on colors on not on shapes…
… not "that" great, anyway, I'll play around it when i'm not busy )

The usefulness lies in the possibility to retrace the source of images you once collected. How useful would it be to find pictures of people who look like you, or your dog -- hmm ... my dog... they do look alike. I have to try this (also when I have more time).

This is such a cool feature. Google know what they're doing. Such a hidden feature probably so few people know of it. So the surprise is nice.
It works in Chrome (obviuosly) and in Firefox. Explorer shows the drop-down frame but no results (not surprised), and Safari doesn't respond to dragging at all.

It responds with me, but only display the image in the web browser :)

For those of you on Safari:

go to Preferences (Safari>Preferences)
click the 'Advanced" icon
check the box: "Show Develop menu in menu bar"
close that window.

go to the Google page, then go to the new "Develop" menu (in Safari) and pull it down to "User Agent", then on down to "Firefox". The page will reload, and Google images will suddenly accept your dropped photo. It's just Safari's way of fooling the rest of the world into thinking it's something else. Doesn't always work, but it does often enough.

Heaven forbid that an animator might be 'strange'
