I meant an American Staffordshire Terrier (also named "amstaff" or "American staff" ^^), the "ancestor" of the Pitbull =)

(which are very nice dogs, when their owners are not stupid persons).

Oh yes I see these sometimes out on our hiking trail. I always think they are pit bulls but now I see they are not. We know some very nice pit bulls, but I still have a little worry when they are around our scruffy fluffy puffy pup. I think there is a prejudice against this type of dog here in the States and yet a lot of people have them.

Yes, there are many prejudices with those dogs, mainly because they were (and are still) used for dog fighting... =(
Amstaf, Pitbulls, Bull terriers... for many people, all those dogs are bloody freaks (it's the same in France and probably in other countries).

But in facts, all depends on the owner, whatever the breed is. Give a Labrador to dumb people and you will turn it into a horrible creature. Give an Amstaff to someone aware of what a dog needs and you will obtain a well balanced dog, friendly and kind like a puppy.
There even was an American study that shown Pitbulls are the most balanced dogs, when they are in a good environment.

One of my friends has an Amstaff, with a Pittbull profile (there are in fact so many differences into that breed... you can find "bulldozer" dogs, "mini sized" dogs... all depends on the breeder). His dog is one of the kindest dog I have ever known. Even when my dog was young, he never had a frightening behavior with her (he only grunted on her once, because she was annoying him with noisy yelps for 10 minutes ).
But if you are still a little afraid, talk with those Pits' owners and ask them. It is the most simple way to know and maybe the beginning of a sweet doggy friendship =)

I heard they are good silent guard dog.
They do seem very nice. Physically, they look like a mix between American staff dogs and Akita dogs.

Chloe is NOT a silent puppy by any means!!!!! LOL We also have a male cat that was so used to the female shepherd. She is too much for him right now, as she is full of playful energy, chases him all over the place.

I used to have neighbor living across the hall from me. She had two pit bulls which she could not control. One of them had my shepherd in her mouth by the throat and would not let go. The owner had to bite her own dog to let my shepherd go. They soon moved after that. My dog was not harmed.. I never feared those dogs, but she was not the right person to own those dogs.

Paul,This was a really informative interview with MS, thanks for sharing it -I really like how he talks abut his dogs, and how he feels going into the "drawing room". Then I watched "In the Night Kitchen" which was a tad spooky!( I wonder what they used for software? )
