Admittedly, I would have never found this issue with a smear brush because I tend to use it the same way I'd use a paint brush, with short, directional strokes for blending colors and building up shapes. If I want the the color to be consistent on a longer stroke, maybe the smear brush isn't the correct brush in the first place (or turn off the smearing and then turn it back on when you actually need the smearing).

For me at least it's a bit of a deal-breaker, as the big selling-point for an independent animator to buy tvpaint is to be able to do everything within one application. From creating the storyboard, modelsheets, animation etc..

You'd still need some video editing software, some sound recording and processing software, and so on. "Doing it all in one program" is a quite common habit amongst amateurs.

Vegas Pro comes with Sound Forge, a pretty solid piece of software and you can record directly onto the timeline. I still claim you can make a professional feature film for theatrical release in TVPaint and Vegas alone. I actually see more overuse of gadgetry and software among amateurs than professionals. It's part of the fun and overall enjoyment of hobbyists. Professionals tend to want to streamline their production time. The roles were reversed years ago.

You have a point there. Of course I left out the bigger studios with their complete and all-in-one poduction systems. Still I like to see myself (and other independent animators, or freelancers) as one who uses whatever is at hand, no matter how crappy the software, how old the hardware - let's say it's a romantic illusion of mine ...

Love your paint animations "meslin", because they showcase what tvpaint does really well.
I too would be happy with the option of a "slower" transparency smear brush.

Thanks "Paul" for the tip on using the smear paint brush from the main tool panel. This brush
indeed works a lot more like you expect it too. There's a few downsides though :

you can't customise it to the same extent as the custom brush
you need to continuously swap brushes between applying color and blending

And there's one obvious question :
If the smear paint brush works nicely with transparency, why doesn't the custom brush
smear mode behave the same way?

It's a bug in the blending process, the bug will be fixed in a future update ( but not in the next one, available tomorrow ).

and would definitely not flag this as fixed

I am using 10.0.06 and I can confirm that the issue with the custom smear brush going to black is no longer present. I tested with the tools under 'Painting Tools' bin.

but as soon as you change some parameters, especially
if you up the smear value or lower opacity, you still get
the same behaviour.

Don't take my word for it, try it with the large paintbrush
or the dry paintbrush from the toolbox

hmmm sorry, but I don't have the bug here, even with the settings you have mentionned ... and none of the people who tested the software during the beta-test did a such report.
Can you post a screenshot (with your tool settings) ? This is important for us : if there is still a bug, we need to track and fix it.

I tested quite a bit yesterday, changing settings and such, and it worked fine for me the whole time.

Hi,

I redownloaded the latest trial just to make sure.

It's quite easy to replicate and goes back to the previous posts.
I've added a screenshot because a picture tells a thousand words.
The behaviour is always there but becomes more obvious
the more you up the smear value or the more you lower the opacity.

I just tried the exact same test, same brushes and same settings. The only thing that changed was the color tone, but didn't go to black (this is a pretty big canvas, too, so I scribbled a lot without lifting the stylus)
