The spots required intricate effects that merged 2D and 3D media. 3D lead Kyle Cassidy says: “TVPaint was used to create a portion of the 2D hand-drawn elements that were layered over the CG elements.”

Too bad the making of doesn't really explain where TVPaint was used.

… maybe because it's part of "the trick they don't want to show" ?
the texturing is incredible and it's great to see how 2D an 3D can be mixed these days… I woul'd better say, the way 2D is getting the best on 3D in these videos…
The 2D look dominates and 3D is almost forgotten (I love it)
… yes it would have been interesting to know how they are able to give such a "painting look" to their 3d objects and animations…
… they get something for sure !

To me, it's a matter of texturing the objects first… and dealing a lot with compositing in a second hand ( ????)

I love that technique, really (how do they do ?)

(maybe not so much the "graphisme"… wich is a bit too classical to my taste)

"At times, we had to go back and render passes that seemed unorthodox. There were spec and diffuse passes that were blatantly generated to be “wrong”, but when filtered they achieved the exact quality needed for the filters to grab onto. It was odd asking our lighters to make passes that didn’t fit the standard practices, however when we found the right technique it was very obvious that these additional layers would eventually gel and enhance the post filters being applied.

On top of all of this, we had two traditional 2D artists go over top of our imagery and produce some more free flowing and stylistic effects that really enhanced the spots as a whole. We even had the designers and art directors chipping in to smudge edges frame by frame just to loosen up the sharpness of the 3D renders."


the second paragraph might concern TVP used as a rotoscoping tool ???
( I'm thinking about it's amazing "impressionist" function ??… wich could comes handy in that case, especially the new one…)

flash as been used for creating fx (waves)… Ae of course to composite the passes from maya… but no TVp under the sunlights

Very nice rendering indeed!
It's quite surprising to see this kind of production for such a product... although the songs put me off to be honest (it sounds like an advert for an album and they quite don't lie about it with all the iTunes links in the Youtube Channel...).

Anyway it does perfectly illustrate when things go wrong in the UK, "Let put the kettle on first!" (don't beat me up British users)

The song is annoying. I guess this is advertising for the "Titanic Generation" - I can't relate to it, however smart it's done.

I think I still prefer the advertising of the 70's and 80's, when a spot selling tea would've been animated mostly in line art, in the style of some contemporary magazine cartoonists, and be funny and surprising.

The style is the surprise… let's imagine what you can do using this painting's look
(in a rubbisher and less "polite" way)

…of course, the magical might vanished rapidly, as soon as everybody will use it… as usual
