tiff sequence export problem

Post by piano »

hi,

I have a problem with the tiff export as a sequence, that is it only exports a single image. I tried the other image formats as sequence export, and it works fine, i get several images, but the tiff export doesn't seem to work on more than 1 frame... I am doing something wrong, or am i the only one in that situation ?
Right now i'm forced to export the tiff sequences via tvp 9.5, which is a bit of a pain...
Thanks for the help...

Works like a charm here, on 9.5.22.

Did you check "Sequence" in the export panel, as opposed to "single image"?

Just tried it in 10.0.06, exported TGA just fine.

EDIT: Oops, you are doing TIFF, not TGA... one second...

Hrm... TIFF export isn't even an option on Linux!

I confirm this; TIFF fails to export more than a single image in TVP10, even when set to sequence and any of the three available compressions. :(

CORRECTION:I had forgotten to give the sequence a starting number 00001. After doing that, export of sequence does work in TVP10, 64 bits. I haven't tested 32 yet but I assume it'll be the same.

Thanks a lot Paul ! That did it !
It's just weird that you don't have to add those 0s for the other image formats ... Anyway, nice trick !

>idragosani : did you udpate your tvp recently ? because i remember tiff export was absent from the windows tvp 10 a few updates ago... maybe it's the same on linux

I thought you always have to do that to export as a sequence -- unless you are using a software that does that automatically for you.

I have the latest TVP 10 for Linux (10.0.6)... strange that TIFF export is missing. I have all of the standard TIFF libraries (libtiff4) installed, too. Oh well, I don't use TIFF much, usually export to PNG

I think I heard it here, but it's worth repeating; for all cross software exports PNG is the best format. Luckily I've been using exclusively PNGs for many years without having that information..

For what we do with TVPaint (animation), PNG is the best option, IMHO, it takes up less space than TIFF and it's not lossy like JPEG. PNG also supports transparency, which JPEG does not. And best of all, PNG doesn't rely on any software patents and is a completely open and free image format.

But for some reason not all PNGs come out looking alike. For filmout sequences I was told to use PNGs and I had two options as a source; either TVP, or Vegas Pro, which I use for editing. I made several tests using both software and took it to the filmout lab. You couldn't see any difference between the two even thrown side by side on a fairly large screen, but a lab technician pointed out for us some pixels that were a wee bit different and in all the tests TVP's PNGs came out looking the best -- he was actually quite astonished with with the results.

Hi Paul,

This might have to do with your graphic card and the way programs make use of it. For example when I export directly from adobe Premiere I get a different result when exporting that same sequence through the Adobe media encoder. Both render exactly the same project, yet the results differ slightly in some edge pixels. This has to do with the fact that when exporting directly from Premiere it makes use of the accelerating capabilities of your graphic card, but the media encoder only uses software rendering. I am unfamiliar with Vegas, but it might work the same way. As far as I know TVPaint doesn't use accelerating capabilities for exporting/ rendering.
I don't think it's .PNG related. you might try the same comparison with some other file format. I think you will get the same difference.

TVPaint doesn't use the graphic cards, except for "Display/Hide pixels". Everything else is software and processor work, it provides the best compatibility and results.
