Q&A: A Codec Moment for Windows
By J.D. BIERSDORFER
Q.
Is there a place or a menu in Windows 7 that lists all the codecs installed on the system for playing audio and video files with Windows Media Player?
A.
You can find such a list of codecs — software used to compress and decompress digital audio and video files — on your Windows 7 machine, but you have to dig deep for it. Start by opening Windows Media Player.
Go to the Help menu and select About Windows Media Player. If you don’t see a top menu bar at all, click on the Organize menu on the left side of the window, choose Layout and select “Show menu bar” to make it appear.
In the About Windows Media Player box, click on the Technical Support Information link. A page opens, and here you can see a list of all the audio and video codecs and other software used by Windows Media Player.

That's exactly where I would have looked first :)
(But I must say I don't know where to look for installed codecs on the Mac either...)

Isn't that how Mac preserves its reputation of infallibility by keeping the works out of reach, thus keeping the machine as simple as its graphics appearance of elegant purity?
