"Sorg, daß dein Weib du lobst / bringt sie Gemüs' und Obst!" (this is more in the shanty-rhythm)

Finnish translation could be:
"Juokseppa vaimos luo, sano: vihannesta pöytään tuo!"
-run to your wife, say: bring vegetables to the table!

Thanks, Kari, I love the the exotic look of those marching diacritics! Now all I need is Russian written in Cyrillic, and Spanish. Perhaps I should copy this thread to the Spanish section...

I'm not really a Spanish speaker, but I would propose :

"Vaya decir a tu mujer : ¡ más verduras a comer !"
(Go say to your wife : more vegetables to eat !)

But well, maybe it's not really correct

vraag je hoen, elke dag, meer groen.
(Ask your chick, every day, more green)
hard to make it shorter, the metre is different in this one, probably making it useless
and hoen is not really used this way in dutch but it could probably pass for sailor slang.

Thanks, Peter -- I'll use one of the earlier ones.

I am a little perturbed by the lack of responses from our Spanish speakers, but I got it now from a neighbor, so I'm covered:

Vete a tu mujer y di
Verduras diarias para mi (with accent on "i").

Go to your wife and say
vegetables on the table (which works well, because that's where the vegetables will show up in the story.)

This thread can be closed now and thanks to all participants for your kindness --
