tvp10 Q: computer bogging down

Post by CharlieC »

i'm trying to isolate/reduce what's causing tvp to bog down while working on a somewhat large project, so i'm curious if any tvp functions are known to be more taxing to the computer than others.

it's tricky- when newly opening the project tvp10 is very responsive, but minutes later the frame advance on my keyboard becomes way too sluggish, both the arrow keys and my quick keys to jump to markers and instance heads. to complicate matters- the issue occasionally goes into remission, only to return. timeline scrolling is less affected, although it comes and goes there too.

it's related to my using a 500+ frame 1920x1080 live-action movie as one of the layers ( the movie itself is 340mb and its sound is imported into tvp too). i've tried it both pre-loaded and not, sound on/off/deleted, i've deleted 2/3 of the footage image area i don't need, but the issue remains. as a test- deleting the layer entirely seems to solve everything, but i do need the layer to roto. the project is now 1.5 gb, but the sluggishness was an issue when the project was 400 mb. (i guess once i deleted image areas of the footage it automatically goes from a 'dependency'/reference footage to pre-loaded and therefore larger file.)

do any of the preview settings matter for navigating through the frames with the keyboard? i've switched them around but didn't notice improvement.
the project only has about 10 layers, with some image markers, bookmarks, opacity adjustments...
i've been closing other apps, and restarting the computer and the projects, but the issue returns.

so- i'd like to know if anyone knows of settings or functions that use more computer power than others, and then i can keep them in mind to avoid when possible.

i'm running os x 10.6.8, 2.53 processor, 4 gb memory, tvp 10

thanks for insights!

i just noticed turning OFF the '=/hide' button, so its deactivated and all layers display, speeds things up... for now...

should that even be a factor?!

and oddly, repeating my test of deleting the suspect layer DID NOT speed things up this time, so maybe i'm just witnessing more intermittent behavior...

still curious if there are any other functions to consider, too.

good question- i don't see that info in the tvp 'about' panel. i downloaded my tvp10, upgrading from 8, in june and i don't think it involved selecting from choices of 32 or 64...
do you know where i can see this info?
a while back when i was on the forum asking about the latest tvp10 mac version, someone on your forum mentioned it wasn't quite ready, but that my current computer wouldn't be able to take full (or any?) advantage of a 64 bit version anyway. but i don't know which one i downloaded from the tvp site; if i'm running it perhaps it's overwhelming my computer.

hi Elodie-

at the risk of overkill, but just interested in expediting the process, i also emailed you since you helped me buy tvp10 a few months ago, and to TVP Register as they sent me the lock/unlock codes. and i sent the same msg when i tried to update from the tvp site.

here's my msg:
i'm wondering if tvp10 will run better on my mac if i upgrade to 64 bits. initially i thought i was limited to 32 bits, but looking 'about this mac' i see:

processor 2.53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3

i guess the '2' in Intel Core 2 Duo mean 64 bit! (or so google tells me.)

looking in the macs 'activity monitor' i see, next to various utilities, many listings of "Intel (64 bit)"

so i guess i should upgrade. i went on the site, entered the lock/unlock codes and it says i need a different dongle. can we set that up, please?

do you guys think it'll run better, or tax the computer more? right now i'm having some very sluggish performance with tvp10; not sure why...
thanks for your continued assistance!

i just became a little familiar with the mac's "activity monitor", CPU and stuff, and took a screen shot. the tvp really bogs down in relation to the spikes on the graph. not sure what's happening to use all that cpu power...

Image

SO! while working i've noticed a consistent difference between the quick responsiveness of the tvp buttons and panels i'm clicking with my stylus on the cintiq, compared to the sluggishness in the quick keys and arrow keys on the laptop!
example: bookmark buttons vs quick keys to bookmarks, and the one i mentioned before- scrolling timeline mostly responsive, keyboard arrows very sluggish....

hmmmmm.

Are you sure you have TVP 10.0.*7* ?
The slow keyboard processing was (or should have been ...) fixed in that version.

If tablet and keyboard input are very different in respond time: have you checked the keyboard? Is it an original Mac keyboard? Are the cables damaged? Did you test with a different keyboard?

that's a good point.
it's a laptop keyboard and i'll check the cables. i don't have an auxiliary keyboard, but that would be a simple way to narrow down the issue further.

smaller projects so far don't seem to be an issue, so perhaps my problematic one has some taxing characteristics that are at fault.

anyone else have ideas as to whether CPU power used more via the keyboard vs the panel buttons?
