NTSC resolution help
NTSC resolution help
Hi folks, heres hoping someone can help me out here. I am doing a project in TVP with my settings at 2160x1440 pixel aspect 0.9 NTSC ( i arrived at 2160x1440 by multiplying 720x480 3 times to give me a bigger canvas so to speak and to cater for HD)
The final destination for this is US tv.
My frame rate is set to 30fps and as i want this animation to be on 2's i have my playback set at 15fps. So i am only creating 225 frames instead of 450 as i want a 15 second duration.
I am exporting a TGA seq at 30 fps then importing those into After effects where i then set my output settings to 15fps which effectively doubles up all my frames...perfect!
Ok, so i have set my AE comp to the same res as my TVP project, 2160x1440 Pixel aspect 0.91 ( TVP option for NTSC is 0.9 whereas AE is 0.91 does that make any difference?)
when i import the TGA seq in there are bars top and bottom....the image is correct but it doesnt fill the AE comp properly......so i'm obviously doing something wrong here.....most probably in AE i guess?
Im at the animatic stage at the moment but really want to get this straight before i start animating this week! I figure i am ok for the time being as long as i am set up properly in TVP right?
Any and all help really appreciated.
Many thanks

Re: NTSC resolution help
I just realised...maybe i should have just asked if there is a easy way of just doubling up all frames in the project at export time...or similar way time saving way of putting animation on 2's?
Forgive my ignorance...this is my first 'real' job using TVP and i'm quietly pooping my pants with the 'technical' side of doing this and getting it right LOL.....the animation is easy its the rest that gets my brain burning!
Cheers
Scott.

Re: NTSC resolution help
When you export through the "Export Footage" Panel(Export to" in File Tab) set your frame rate to 30fps and TVP will automatically double all your frames.

Re: NTSC resolution help
Well, I can tell you don't have TVP 10, because what you have done is a very common mistake and 10 would have given you a warning by turning your frame rate red. The frame rate on the playback window is just for that and does not effect your project settings. It's a small problem to fix. Did you animate in singles or double frames?

Re: NTSC resolution help
Aaaaah i see...i animated in singles.....is this the correct fix: modify project ...change frame rate to 15 fps...then just extend my animation out to the correct length...its mostly only held stills for the animatic and i guess i just add some inbetweens where i have done some singles animation? sound ok?

Re: NTSC resolution help
Well you confuse me a bit but you are on the right track. If you animated in singles and your project runs at correct speed when played back at 15, all you need to do is double each frame and export as 30, which will preserve your double framing.

Re: NTSC resolution help
sorry for the confusion! i guess i want a project with only half the frames in as my master project then only double them up at export time once client has approved and assistant has cleaned up etc.
Forgive my ignorance but even though i trained in traditional 2D (and worked on a big feature) that was over 20 years ago and i've been doing cg animation for 20 years now and this is my first real project using a digital 2d program and im a bit rusty LOL.
What is the most economical and sensible way of setting up a project then if i want to animate on doubles? Also while i have you here (sorry, a bit cheeky i know) my clean up person will probably be using photoshop...ive tested this pipeline for a still but am now wondering about how to bring in a sequence that has been clened up in photoshop? can you import a TGA seq into a single layer...i hope the answer is yes????

Re: NTSC resolution help
This is a pipeline other people here are more familiar with -- I am strictly a two software, hand drawn in the computer type, my 2nd software being a video editing application. There are plenty of people here who can come to your assist soon -- if not, I'll give it a go, botch up something which will irritate all of them to no ends and then they'll jump in.

Re: NTSC resolution help
If you are animating on 2s, you just need to double the length of each instance. If you have one exposure per instance, you can use the 'Add +1" or "Add +N" exposures under Animator Panel->Exposure toolbar after selecting all of the instances you want to put on 2s. At least that's how I would do it.scottypp wrote:What is the most economical and sensible way of setting up a project then if i want to animate on doubles? Another option is to go the old fashioned route and use the X-Sheet (I think it's only available in the TVP Pro version, however).
You can import any image sequence under the layers window using the 'Import Footage' option via the right click context menu. If your images are numbered appropriately (image00001.tga, image00002.tga), TVP should recognize it as a sequence and provide you with options for importing. Personally, I think TVPaint is better for doing cleanup work with!

Re: NTSC resolution help
Thanks again guys....
Brett....i agree about cleaning up in TVP being better, but i only have the one copy and so whoever will be doing my clean up will probably use photoshop.
Thanks for the tip on converting to 2's.
Cheers.
