hi William,
we need some more infos on your config , what's your OS ? ... which version of tvpa ?
is your cam properly installed and connected to your computer ?
did you open the Video In window in tvpa, and if so, what is displayed in the Device list ?

Plug in the Simplicity Cam to a USB port.

If you're on Mac go grab a free software called CamTwist . If you're on Windows use the X-Sight software that came with the Simplicity Cam.
In either case , the software controls the camera for settings like brightness/contrast , and controlling digital zoom-in/zoom-out

For Windows - Open TVPaint , go to Windows Menu -- Settings -- Video In Settings . You should see the Simplicity Cam (or it may be called something generic like "USB Video Device" ) in the available devices for the Video Input panel. I am not on Windows so I can't give yo a step-by-step on this , but maybe someone here can do so . I think the TVPaint team has a Simplicity Cam in their office.

For Mac - first thing go look at this tutorial called Using CamTwist with Simplicity Cam 5e and TVPaint.

Follow the directions in that tutorial to set up CamTwist to use the Simplicity Cam 5e . With the camera set up and CamTwist running now open TVPaint .

Go to Windows menu -- Setttings -- Video In Settings ---

When the Video Input panel comes up click on the button that says "Settings" . From the Source tab select CamTwist as the video source , Click OK .

Do the usual for video capture with TVPaint - enable the little "V" button on the lower right side of the TVPaint Project window , at the lower left edge of TVPaint change "Color" to "None" .

It's all described in the tutorial: Using CamTwist with Simplicity Cam 5e and TVPaint.

You should also check out this tutorial on how to lock down the Simplicity Cam for steady registration when capturing animation drawings:

Lock Down the Simplicity Cam 5e

An important thing about video capture is to have adequate lighting . You want to have bright, evenly diffused lighting on the drawings with no shadows or hotspots. Again , check out that tutorial , it has a section near the end on the proper kind of lighting set up to use .
