Help please. printing problem
Hi everyone!
I have a question regarding printing! I hope someone here can help me.
I'm trying to make a poster for my animation. It should be printed on A1.
I have created my animation on 1920*1080 in TVPaint. and the poster is a still from the animation.
I understand even though 1920*1080 is full HD for film, it isn't enough resolution for printing A1 image.
Is there any way I can work round this? Or do I have to Redraw the image in TVP much bigger?
For printing A1 I read that my image should be
My main problem is that the image is quite detailed and I dont even remember how I made the texture background etc...
Help please

Re: Help please. printing problem
For an A1 poster you should have something like 4900 x 3500 px at least - this is for the old workflow where such a poster was exposed in A3 size with 300 dpi, then enlarged to A1 optically. Remember that you're not supposed to look at an A1 poster from reading distance. Today they print even large A1 posters in full 300 dpi, that would be 9500 x 7000 px. Ask your printer for details.
You could modify your TVP project (cut down to one frame) to the larger size, then redraw just the line art - if the line is still on a separate layer.
Maybe you could post the frame here?

Re: Help please. printing problem
I think I have to redraw the image! The problem is I cant remember how I created some of the brushes!!
One of them was chinese brush which I had it on smear so it would start on a color and quickly became black!
Now I cant recreate the brush any more.

I'm trying to redraw this again. What I did was I created 9933* 7015 project. and then copied one frame of the animation (line drawing) to bring to the new project to trace!
The problem is, it skew it to fit the project! How can I bring in without skewing it?
Re: Help please. printing problem
Always check "correct aspect ratio" when modifying or importing. Don't just copy 1 frame from one project to another project as this will always get "fit to project". Instead modify project, or export and import.

Thank you.
I saved my project with a different name and reduced it to 1 still and modified the project to 9933* 7015
My line drawing became tiny and scaled it up with Transform tool. It's not very pixalated! I was expecting it to be very different! but I can hardly see a difference!!
It probably shows up when it prints!
I tried to stencil the drawing so I could draw on top of it!! and TVP crashed!!:( is it because of the huge file?
Re: Help please. printing problem
Huge project dimensions might be a reason for a crash of TVP on weaker computers. Some tricks:
- switch off every layer you don't need to see while drawing.
- quit all other applications.

Actually one more question!
I made the still and had to take it to after effects for some more tweeks!!
I exported the still as a PSD file and brought it to photoshop.
Looking at the Image size in photoshop all the dimensions are right but it says 72 for resolution.
Does this matter?
Thanks

Why can't I choose the DPI resolution with TVPaint Animation ?
DPI only matters when you're printing things out. DPIs are used to indicate how dense the image resolution will be when you will print your illustration. The resolution is measured in Dots Per Inch, and the higher the DPI rating, the finer the detail the printer will attempt to print.
In animation, DPI resolution is usually irrelevant since you don't print animations. Worrying about DPI in an animation is like worrying about FPS (Frame per second) in an illustration.
Nevertheless, you can convert illustrations made in TVPaint Animation with most desktop publishing programs. You can also simply increase your project's resolution to match the required DPI.
For example:
A 8x10" project printed @ 72 DPI = 576x792 pixels
A 8x10" project printed @ 300 DPI = 2400x3300 pixels.
Re: Help please. printing problem
I am printing this frame in A1 so that's why I need to make sure the resolution is right.
I modified my project is TVP to a larger size.
I have made the dimension what A1 should be : 9933* 7015 pixels
and saved as a psd file. brought into photoshop. looking into Image size tab, the dimensions are all correct but it says 72 resolution pixel/inch.
Shouldn't this be 300 dpi as this is a huge size?!!

Re: Help please. printing problem
(I really should keep a copy of this part somewhere, I've explained this so often in my life!)
DPI means dots per inch and defines how many pixels are spread about a certain distance (1 inch) on real paper. As long as you exchange files between programs, this doesn't matter, so most film software just assumes 72 DPI.
In Photoshop you can easily set the DPI value: Image > Image size, uncheck "resample image", type in the desired resolution or the desired dimensions in cm. The actual value doesn't matter as long as it's better (=larger) than 250 DPI.

Thank you so much Tiger.
I changed the Dpi to 300 in photoshop and the document size got changed to the right size(for A1) :84cm* 59cm. Before it was something like 300cm!
And the dimension is still 9933* 7015pixel
I think this should be right.
Many many thanks for your help.
Just One more thing what will happen is I change the resolution to 600? will this make a better print?
Re: Help please. printing problem
Aside from having to deal with a 4 times bigger file, changing to 600 dpi will not improve anything as the dot raster of the print will most likely be 150 or 185 LPI only. (LPI is the same as DPI, just with lines instead of dots.) Don't forget it's a poster: it's to be watched from at least 1,5 m distance, not with a magnifying glass in 5 cm distance!

Okay I understand. I'm sure I wont be able to tell the difference at all anyway! I'm just worried as I have to make sure everything is right and correct as I can only print this once!
Since it's quite expensive to print a A1 in color.
Many thanks for your guides. it really helped me understand this much better.
Does it matter what I export it as for printing? PNG or Jpeg?
The fact that its a huge file means it will be very slow to print?
