pen tool/wacom eraser tip bug

Post by piano »

here's a weird bug i noticed some time ago. it happens everytime i do these things in this order :

- i draw using the pen. most of the time in color mode.
- I cut a brush with the freehand tool. then with the brush tool on, i use the eraser tip of the wacom stylus. by default this gives me the pen tool in erase mode with opacity set to pressure.
- i return to the brush tool ( by using the usual drawing end of the wacom stylus)
- i then hit the pen keystroke shortcut and the bug appears : the pen is now set with the parameters of the eraser end of the wacom stylus, even though i'm using the other end. so i have to reset it to color mode, change the opacity connected to the pressure and whatever changes.

I hope this is clear. i usually get around this bug by changing the eraser tip of the stylus to the airbrush tool in erase mode right after i launch tvpaint, and then the pen tool keeps it's original parameters no matter what i do. So it's not a huge bother, but just to let you know, maybe you're not aware of this...

If understand you correct, this is not a bug - it's normal. TVP remembers settings for the last tool you are using. what happens in your case is this: The eraser you are using is probably a PenBrush. When you cut a custom Brush, your Wacom pen tip remembers it. After you use the eraser, the settings for a PenBrush are registered. Then you turn your pen to draw with the normal tip, and it still should have your custom cut brush with all it's settings. But when you click the PenBrush, then of course it will use the last PenBrush settings, that were last set by your eraser. Any tool will behave like that.
What you need to do, if, after erasing, you don't want to use your custom cut brush tool, then just pick any other tool from any custom panel, that has already a predefined Color, Opacity or whatever you need setting. But don't pick a tool from the Main Tools panel, unless you need to recall any tool with the most recent settings.

Let me know if I answered clear - it looks obvious to me, but maybe it's not as clear to somebody that isn't yet used to it...

i understand. I thought since tvpaint is able to differenciate each end of the stylus, it was able to remember the last settings associated to them independently. but that's not the case. no matter, i've dedicated the airbush to the eraser tip.

in this case, i'm changing my bug report to a feature request :) would it be possible to make tvpaint remember the settings configuration for the eraser as you leave ? or maybe make possible to change the default settings for the eraser ?

The way to do it, is to pick your tools not from the Tools panel, but from a custom panel with ready preset tools - that's the way we all do it and that's the way it was thought to work. Just open any of the default Sketch Panels, or the Tool Bin and choose the eraser there with the eraser tip, and a pencil with the pen tip. This way it will work exactly as you want. You can also create your own brushes or change parameters of existing ones.
