Using TVpaint with a Wacom Cintiq

TVPaint isn't multiple monitor aware, but you can stretch the application across both monitors and have your animation sub-window on your Cintiq and your timeline in the second monitor (you have to detach it so it's not stuck in place, the default). This is how I use TVPaint, as a matter of fact.

Yes this is what I want to do but how do you detach the timeline? The panel bins are 'dragable' and detachable but the timeline seems created differently and doesn't allow itself to be moved around.

I think if you double click on its title bar it will detach and be movable

You're right it does but you need the monitor with the same resolution/size as the Cintiq otherwise you lose part of the Cintiq screen (too make a long story short).

Yeah, you have to fiddle around to get it to work. In my case, my Cintiq screen (1600x1200) is bigger than the second monitor (1024x768). To be honest, I stopped working this way (two monitors) because it was clumsy to have to stop using the pen and then use the mouse to manipulate the timeline (you can still hold the pen while using the mouse to make this a little more streamlined). Much easier to just keep the timeline out of the way when you don't need it and pop it up when you do (using a shortcut key so you can control with free hand).

What would be really convenient (and this falls into the feature request realm) is to be able to playback into a second monitor, as a separate screen from where you are drawing from. Some Video NLEs do this by having a "clip monitor" so you can see just the current clip in one window and a "project" monitor for playback of the full project, which you can configure to play in a separate monitor (I know Sony Vegas does this, so does the open source kdenlive). This would fit well into TVPaint's workflow since it does have a project level scope in addition to individual scenes or clips.

You can do the same in TVP when you open the New Zoom Window (under "View"). I've been doing this for years. There's a key command for it and you can move the window to any monitor you wish. I like to draw rather small images in a smallish project window, and with this setup I can keep an eye on a 100% screen size window all the time.

What I would like to have is to use the key command to toggle the Zoom Window to open and close whenever I playback and stop my clip.

Can you do this while having the main application window maximized on one monitor and moving the zoom window to the other monitor, or do I still need to stretch everything across multiple monitors? I'll have to try this out when I am back in the studio (on vacation right now)

No, you are correct; you can do it only by stretching the GUI across monitors. I have 4 monitors; basically more for Vegas than TVP and the forth one is the dedicated remote screening one for Vegas. So I just stretch TVP over that one too, which is positioned on top of my drawing one, and get the exact same setup as working with Vegas.
