Another demo: an Adobe investigation of some prototype tools (a pen and a short "straight" edge ruler) and the software that works interactively with those tools.

It's already in TVPaint since the 9.0 or 9.5 (smear souce mode in the brushes)Peter Wassink wrote:skip the lame talk and check out what they do from around the 2 minute mark

Re: adobe smart brushes
but i thought tvp's smear source mode only picks its colors from the active drawing surface, its destructive.
it would be better if you could set the source like you can the fill tool.
but please Please ...don't put it on any to do list soon, its more a gimmick then actually very usefull.
i'd rather you spend time looking into the layerlinking request that just came up again

Re: adobe smart brushes
And now that I've been initiated, I would like to add my vote for this layer linking idea. Isn't it very much akin to "Merge Visible" "Merge Current Group's Layers" etc? To me, this idea sounds like one of those ready to implement thoughts because the coding for it already exists -- but what do I know about coding...i'd rather you spend time looking into the layerlinking request that just came up again

You can set a source in the "shape settings" panel.

Yes, this effect, described here:

A tutorial would be helpful because I have to confess I've never been able to figure out how to make this work .

make sure you have an image
create an empty image next to it, set source to previous in the shape settings
then take any custombrush (many tools in the tool bin are custombrush based tools) and set the color mode to "Smear Source"
and your good to go
the smear behaviour can be tweaked by setting the smear percentage in the toolpanel
the smaller the brush the more detail of the original comes through.

Re: adobe smart brushes
Nothing new, really. TVPaint can do this, maybe not exactly the same way, but similar in spirit. Corel Painter has had a similar feature for years also.

Re: adobe smart brushes
I can't get this effect to work either unless I color directly on the original image. Setting 'Shape Settings' to 'Previous' doesn't seem to do anythingPeter Wassink wrote: turns out its very easy.

Re: adobe smart brushes
OK, I see how this works now!
1) Use Shape Settings -> Display if you are coloring in a layer above the original artwork or photo.
2) Use Shape Settings -> Previous if you are coloring in an instance following the original artwork in the timeline.
Of course you do have to use a custom brush set to 'smear source'. You have to experiment with the different brushes and sizes to see what works well. It's kinda neat to use a large wet sponge to get a very abstract smeary background and then come in with a small chalk or oil paint brush to work in the details.
This could make for some neat motion graphics & effects
