What is the best way to find unpainted area in TVPaint?

an other solution would be to use the lazybrush plug-in :

Here's a tutorial you should look at:

This was made using the older TVPaint 8 interface , so it looks a bit different than the current TVPaint 10.5 interface, but aside from those small differences this remains a valid tutorial on painting a character layer in TVPaint.

that tutorial is good but to tackle unpainted areas i like to start with coloring the whole shape, the silhouet.

i create a fully colored layer under the line animation and then erase all color outside of the figure by using the paintbucket (set to source above) right click in a far corner.
then select the whole layer and press enter. this will give you a fully colored figure without unpainted areas.
now you can continue with coloring the different colors inside, in the normal way, either with the paintbucket,
or by hand, using the silhouet as a mask.

I thought I would add to Peter's comments with some screen captures illustrating the method he outlined above.

For the purposes of illustration I've used the source file from the tutorial previously referenced.

Here it is , step-by-step (in this example all the coloring done on a single color layer underneath the line art layer) --






(*this step requires two clicks with the Flood Fill tool in Erase mode -- 1.) click outside the character to erase the color outside the character's outlines , and 2.) one additional click in the enclosed area between the character's raised arm and her head. )

If you hide the Line Art layer you can see the results , showing the character's interior completely filled with the neutral color :










And continue until all the previously "neutral" color areas have been replaced with the correct colors selected at will from the Picker or from the character's pre-arranged Palette of colors imported into the Mixer panel (as individual swatches or as an image) .

Once you get the hang of it and are used to this workflow it is fast and easy to paint the character's color layer in this manner.

Maybe there is no need to know what I am doing right now, but I will explain.
This aliased image has tiny holes and it's hard to find, so I make a new layer and fill those holes using Filled Rectangle with Fill inside option checked.

Those holes are filled with fresh red color, but It's still hard to find exactly where holes are.
So I add effect "Stylize - Border" to the new layer, and finally it gets easy to find exact location of those holes.

I always do this kinda things to find holes in other applications which has border effects.
Right now this is the best way for me.
