Issue Opening in 10.0.7 at School

Post by mikejwitz »

Hey all,

First time posting here, so quick introduction: I'm a Concordia University (Montreal, QC) student in the Film Animation program, first year. We're working on our year-end film, and the computers at school are loaded with TVPaint 10.0.7 (Why have they not updated them? I don't know).

I've been working on my film, saving multiple versions, luckily, but I can't seem to open the latest one. While working on it, it crashed. When I try to open it, it gets to about 40% and then the program quits unexpectedly. I have a link to a Dropbox download of the .tvpp file, and I feel like it might not be opening because they haven't updated to the latest version? Maybe I'm being hopeful. If the file's corrupt, I can always go back to an earlier one, but I'd hate to get back to where I was only for it to happen again.

Here's the link. File's about 160 Mb, compressed to 28 Mb: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ylxwznrumua01 ... _Check.zip

If you can, and you have the latest version, can you check to see if it opens?

Many thanks!

Hello Mike.

I can open your project without issues on the latest version of TVPaint (10.5.5).
Quick question : what operating system are you using ? Mac OS, Windows, Linux ?

Amazing! Phew. Thanks, Thierry! I'm on MAC OS X 10.8.5 here at school.

Thierry,

I downloaded Mike's file and tried to open in TVPaint 10.5.5 32bit on Mac OS 10.9.1 and it crashes after loading about 40% as Mike reported. I also tried to open the file in TVPaint 10.5.5 64bit and it opened , but the file has no images , it is one black frame, held for 120 exposures.

Thanks for confirming, David! The image that you're referring to is just the first clip. If you go to the project view, you should see the rest, totalling about 1600 or so frames.

If anyone can open it, and are able to export a video (Quicktime, H.264, 24fps, no keyframes, medium quality) to send to me, that would be a tremendous help while I talk to the coordinator at school about a possible upgrade (Or until I save enough to purchase a copy to use at home). At least from there I can try to recover my progress.

You can post a link here or send it to my e-mail, mikejwitz@gmail.com.

Much appreciated!

Sent you an email with Dropbox link .

Your coordinator at school should definitely upgrade from version 10.0.7 to 10.5.5 (it's FREE upgrade) .

Got it! Thanks, again!

Haha that's what I told them, but it might not be good enough. They're pretty fond of the H.264 codec for some reason or other and might be holding back on the upgrades to keep this feature. Heck, from TVP I was able to download the update myself but only got as far as dragging the application from the .dmg file to the computer before it stopped me on account of administrator permissions. I'll keep talking to them.

I hope what David sent you is much of your project...
I was able to recover the first 10 scenes.

The last 60% or so of your file are just zero bytes... is your hardrive going bad ?

You should definitively set Autobackup to at least 5 in "Edit > Preferences > General'.

By the way, if you have the update .dmg, you can drag the app on your desktop instead of 'Applications", and launch it from there. Should work even if you're not an administrator :)
Just be sure to launch it by double clicking that icon, double clicking a .tvpp file will usually open the old one from 'Applications'.
Quicktime is DEAD. Get over it and move on !
