Dissolve in an animatic

Post by melissam »

Hey guys, I have another question-
Does anyone know how to make a dissolve from one scene to another in an animatic?

You can't do this in the Project tab. FX can only be applied to layers, inside a clip.

This is why I don't use TVP to storyboard (even though I bought Pro for this reason alone). A dissolve is such a basic thing in a storyboard...

Hi Lukas, welcome back...

TVPaint Animation was not created at the beginning as a storyboard / animatic software, but as a painting software, then an animation software.
These features was implemented in 2009, while the original core of TVPaint was created in 1991.
So, we had to deal with our own limits. That's why you cannot apply FX on an animatic, even if, obviously, that would be really awesome.
Be sure we are the first frustrated ones.

In a future (not so far), with a new TVPaint engine, that will be possible. But sadly, not at the moment.
Be patient, "Roma wasn't built in a day", and obviously, re-writing a 20 years old software is very long.

This is why I work in tandem with an NLE. See my post in this thread:
http://forum.tvpaint.com/viewtopic.php? ... 866#p72866" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
But having said this, I often use dissolves and cross-dissolves in TVP. For doing this I learned a neat and simple trick from slowtiger that bypasses the KeyFramer : Draw a frame you want to fade, followed by an empty frame. Then stretch the tail handle out to the desired length of the dissolve using interpolation and it's done; quick and simple.

I never left... ;)

Are you guys working on a new TVPaint from scratch? That sounds great! I don't mind waiting a few years.

(About the dissolve feature, it's just that I think a storyboard function should at least allow dissolves and easy camera movements. But those things are near to impossible in TVP. Of course, I still draw storyboards in TVPaint, there's no software that could do it better, but the actual animatic timing is done in Premiere.)

But doesn't this seem like something you can only do in the Clip timeline view? not the Project tab view? Do you think you could explain this a little more, or send me a screen shot? I'm pretty new to this program. I have the panels in my storyboard as different scenes in the thumbnail view, and each thumbnail only has 0- 3 frames in the clip view... I resolved to not use the clip timeline view that much, since I'm still confused about how to accurately time to music in this view >_>
I did find it weird that TVP couldn't do dissolves, it's a more basic storyboarding function, but I understand that TVP is always progressing, and that's fine. If I don't get the hang of the interpolation thing that you were talking about, maybe I'll export my pictures as PSDs or something and edit the timing in After Effects?

hmm...

Thanks so much for all the feedback, so far I'm really loving the support community here!

The guy who should really be addressing this question is Madsjul, since he is a day in/day out hardcore, professional storyboard artist and has contributed much of his experiences to the development of the storyboard features. I don't even go there in my pipeline but stick to the classical Thumbnails storyboard panels which I progressively carry through from storyboard thumb to animatic and eventually to final pencil test and coloring.

Sorry to pick this one sentence out of it's context, but are there plans about a new engine, in a not so far future?
