colours look faded when the project is exported

Post by bouwine »

Dear people of the technical support and other forum members,

My name is Bouwine Pool. I am an animator from the Netherlands. I have been using TVPaint for 16 years and made a lot of beautiful stuff with it, so a very happy user!
Today I ran into a little problem I hope you can help me with.
When I export a quicktime, the colours of the film change. Like the colours have faded in the washing machine, much more desaturated then the original colours. I've tried any kind of compression, also no compression. A single picture like a Jpeg also comes out faded. Tiff looks also desaturated but darker. Has anybody any idea why that is and how to solve it.

Thanks!
Kind regards from Bouwine

This is odd. An exported single image TIFF or PNG is supposed to look exactly like what you see in TVP.
Could you do a test? Make a screenshot from your TVP project window, then export the same image from TVP as PNG, and open both in the same program. Do they still look different?
TVP 10.0.18 and 11.0 MacPro Quadcore 3GHz 16GB OS 10.6.8 Quicktime 7.6.6
TVP 11.0 and 11.7 MacPro 12core 3GHz 32GB OS 10.11 Quicktime 10.7.3
TVP 11.7 Mac Mini M2pro 32GB OS 13.5

Hi Slowtiger,

Thanks for the quick response!
I just did what you asked. Make a screenshot and export the picture from tvpaint as png. Opened them up in Preview, but they look different. I'll post them here for you to see what the difference is.

This is very strange! Because I see no difference once i have posted it on the forum. However in Preview there defenitly is a difference!?

When I open up the quicktime in the Quicktimeplayer, the colours look darker and more desaturated, but when I import the quicktime in TVPaint, the colours look fine. So maybe it is not a TVPaint problem, but something else.

I had the problem once : Windows display settings were set to alter the preview made through the windows display tools.

How does the tvpaint exported .png looks like in other software ?

Most of the time, it's a color profile problem : TVPaint does not manage color profile and so, an image displayed in a this or that viewer can be a little different from TVPaint.

I think you are are right. It is most probably a colour profile problem in TVPaint.
I will update my computer today. Hopefully that will help.
Thanks for the feedback!
