linux unrecognize sound and freeze

Hello, my name is Merel.
First time posting :3
I've been animating with tvpaint for years

Last year I made the switch from windows to linux.
But I seem to have a few problems when using sound.
I don't know how to fix this problem.


-Linux debian wheezy 64-bit
-tvpaint 10.5.7 professional 64-bit

Everytime i try to load a soundfile in my tvpaint timeline I
experience problems with tvpaint.

First in the loading window tvpaint does not recognize the wav or mp3
or flac file, he displays a questionmark icon next to the filename.

Second when playing or scrubbing I hear no sound.

Third, as soon as I stop with playing or scrubbing tvpaint freezes.

I only have this problem with linux and not in a windows environment.

Hello Merel, welcome here !

I am not surprised that flac files won't work. I can be wrong (I'm more used to Mac system), but I assume TVPAINT can only read mp3 and wav.

As Fabrice asked : could you please send us your sound files ? Perhaps you are using à codec that tvpaint can't recognize.

thanks for replying, the codec thing has been on me mind, so I checked it before hand, but to be sure I did it again.
By the way, you can donwload the unrecognized sound files from http://trickdesign.eu/TVpaint/unrec-sound.zip
As flac files are not supported anyway, I did not include them, nor did I use them in the test cases below.

To be sure I reinstalled TVpaint 10.5 on a test Windows machine.

case 1: TVpaint 10.5.7 Professional 64 bits on WIndows 7 Home Premium 64 bits, service pack 1

When clicking File/import from the menu the WAV and MP3 sound files are preceeded with a question mark,
and TVpaint refuses to load them without error message.

When clicking in Timeline/master soundtrack/load soundtrack again the sound files are preceeded with a question mark,
but now loading them works just fine, and playing/scrubbing them works too, no freezes at all


case 2: TVPaint 10.5.7 Professional 64 bits on Linux Debian Wheezy 64 bits

Oh ! I got you !

You cannot import / Load sound from this menu (it only works with images, videos or tvpaint files).

To import sound, you must open the sound drawer and hit the music note icon.

Ha ha, you got me silly me expecting sound to be treated like images.
Nooo they're second class citizens, with their own backdoor entrance XD

Joking aside, I also used the correct way to import sound. And the sounds get imported but don't play or scrub.

just noticed: dates posted seem one hour off, unless your server is still running in daylight savings time

Verify that the audio settings in TVPaint match what you have setup for your system and for your audio files. Are you using PulseAudio or direct ALSA sound?

look at your CPU and change your board preferences : unable Summer Time and check your time zone.

I was using alsa. After installing pulseaudio I now have sound and no freeze!

I was using alsa. After installing pulseaudio I now have sound and no freeze!

Chances are that something else was grabbing the audio resources (web browser or who knows what) when using ALSA directly.
