Wow, so all this issue I was having came down to this quirk in TVPaint about choosing multiple or single FX. Something which it appears many have no clue what the difference is. I certainly don't. I go to do a single effect, and so naturally I would choose "single FX", although it was just set at that anyway. This is one of those things which is counter intuitive and confusing and I hope might be addressed in a future update, as Peter suggests. Thanks to ZigOtto for nailing this. Good thing I did that whole video since no one was able to guess that this could cause the problem. Thanks everyone, for your help. This community forum is great!

I completely agree that the difference between "Multiple FX" and "Single FX" mode in the FX Stack needs to be better explained in the user manual .

That said , I use "Single FX" mode frequently, so I would like the option to remain.

Can someone explain in very simple terms an example of where the single or multi FX choice would be made? In my case, I wanted to do a single multiplane move. It was set to single by default and I had no cause to imagine it should be changed, but it would be good to get my head around why, in this case, applying a single effect would mean I should choose multi. To be fair, the effect worked fine with single, but then I had that issue that when I close the FX window, it's all gone. Why does multi have the effect of not deleting the multiplane effect? Why would anyone want that deleted by closing the panel in either single or multi FX mode?

David, closing/opening the FX stack panel by using the [FX] button on the main panel (or a shortkey) won't loose your FX,

in your case, it disappeared because you've opened a new MultiPlane FX, and in "simple FX" mode, a new FX will replace (overwrite) the previous one.

Interesting. So using that button hides or displays the panel, but does not "close" it. Good to know. By the way, I see you have a few buttons along there that I don't. How do you change that? I can't see any preference or option for doing that.

It's worth noting here that you can by the same token have any amount of the same FX opened at the same time. For instance, I often use the KF on more than just one of my layers and each with with different settings, so I'll have all three of them stacked up and I can either have them all activated at the same time, or click them on one by one.

indeed its needed very much.... thats why you already can
in the pulldown to the right of the name, its the top entry (click on the name to alter it, i use it all the time to keep track of my different KF versions)

though for UI consistency it would be great if you could double click an FX name to change it, just like you can with a layer name. quirky quirky

"display/hide" or "open/close", for windows (or panels), it's the same beast,
we currently use "open/close" naming to "make it appear/disappear" on the tvpa window.
afaik, opening/closing a panel doesn't affect its content(s),
true for the FX-stack panel, and for any custom panel as well.
"to close" a panel is just "to close" it (like you close a drawer),
but not "to close & empty" it, neither "to delete" it.
(nb : only custom panels are deletable).

Amazing. How long has this been in existence? --- I bet so long nobody can remember. But I don't use the FX stack that often either to have little irritants like these bother me for longer than a minute. I have lived in the difficult and cumbersome analog world for so many decades that very few things bother me here. This probably best explains my occasional intolerance for instant whiners that can be misconstrued by some as the Stockholm syndrome.

So I'm testing the multiplane camera. Works pretty well (using layers from another project) until I save them, close them and open both projects again. Then all is gone... Why? And how can I avoid this? Is there a special way of saving these projects?
Also... if I'd be using layers from the same project for the multiplane bgs, and I obviously would be using huge backgrounds to have them move around, how can I move them around in a normal aspect ratio project (say 1920x1080) - seems to me the project has to be the same size as the backgrounds and that's quite pointless...
Losing my mind here. Please help! :p

Hi Olve,

one way to use the MPC and the way I mostly prefer (if not using After Effects) is, to have a "main" project (e.g. 1920 x 1080) where the result of the MPC will be shown and later will be rendered to. In that project I use the MPC (FX Stack) und set its source layers to other open projects with mostly bigger dimension. For every layer of the MPC I have an own project. All projects (main and layers) have to be open at the same time.

Maybe there is a possibility to have all other layers in one extra project, but I am not sure with that. So maybe someone other can add that information.

To have all parts in one big project including the MPC it is maybe an idea to use the normal camera set to the output size (e.g. 1920 x 1080) and position it to the needed place. And then export the camera view instead of the whole project view. But I never tested this.

I do as you say. But the problem is that as soon as I save and close the projects it'll all be gone the next time I open both projects. I can't save it.

OK,

the basic steps of doing an MPC movement are:
1. Open MPC in FX-Stack
2. Connecting the planes with the sources in MPC
3. Doing the movement with the MPC
4. Render the movement to all the frames of an layer of your current project.

After doing this 4 steps (and closing and reopening the project), what are you missing? The MPC Settings in your FX stack ore the rendered frames on your timeline?
