guidelines panel feedback

Post by furushil »

Hello,

I was working a lot with the guidelines panel during the last days and wanted to give the development team some feedback.

Let me first say that I think the guidelines are very easy to use, totally handy and absolutely amazing (although it feels like cheating when I use the vanishing points and ellipses :D)

Here is my Feedback:

Bug:
First add a custom brush to the library. Then add a guideline as „support->image“. Now I can rename the guideline but when I restart TVPaint the guideline is named „custom brush“ again.

Feature Request (or I could not find how to do it):

- I would like to reorder guides or be able to move them up/down in the list.

- I would like to be able to duplicate an existing guide, so that I don’t have to type the same parameters in when a guide is almost similar to another.

- It would be great if I could move a support image around more easily after I placed it somewhere. Right now it is only possible with the arrows in the guidelines panel?

- A keyboard shortcut for „toggle assist“ would be great. This one is tricky I guess because the program has to know which one to toggle. If it would work with „the last one used“ it would be perfect for me.

This is my feedback so far.

Some feedback from me too:
  • - perspective vanishing points should probably snap to a horizontal level. When making 2-point perspective, I almost always want the vanishing points to be on a shared horizon line which is perfectly horizontal. It's a pain to have to set the Y coordinates of each vanishing point when I'd rather move them as a "unit." The only time the two vanishing points are not on a horizontal is in the case of "Dutch tilt" where the horizon line of the entire image is askew. This is quite uncommon.
    - it would be nice if I could go into the Library panel, right-click on an image, and select "New guide from image," just as I can make a new brush.

Hi, thanks for the feedback on using the guidelines, its a great feature indeed have many potentials to evolve.
as for the above notes, if you click on the "Edit" button

you can edit the guides in your scene visually with handles when you hover over them without using the panel, the parameter in the panel will update accordingly.

I discovered that last week, the "Edit..." might need a border to look like a button, or maybe renamed to "Edit Guides", it can also be developed so when clicked, users can adjust the guides on the scene, and reorder them in the panel.

As for the horizontal perspective, I second neonnoodle suggestion and believe a simple hold Shift while dragging the 2 perspective guide can do the trick.

Cheers.

I see, yes that is very useful. I clicked on edit before but nothing happened and I did not understand what it does.
Can I do something else with the edit button other then transform a support image?

 Another very useful option would be to be able to place text somewhere as a guide. Just like we have the support->image option, there could be a support-> text option.

yes, you can edit vanishing points when using perspective guides, ellipses, circles radius and center, etc.

good idea, indeed.

I tried it yesterday but could not see the blue edit points. I did something wrong probably. It is working now, great!
It would be good if I could also rotate an ellipse when "edit" is on. Maybe holding down SHIFT and then dragging one of the points. Or did I miss something again?
