[MacOSX] Loss of quality with latest Yosemite update

Post by Thierry »

Hello Mac users,

We have discovered earlier today that with the 10.10.4 update of Yosemite, there is a loss of information with the Wacom tablet.
To avoid this issue, you have to be in fullscreen mode.

Here is what happens in TVPaint Animation :

This issue also happens with Gimp and Krita, and a little bit with Artrage.

If you don't want to be in fullscreen mode when using TVPaint Animation, I would advise you to not update your Mac to 10.10.4, and stay in at least 10.0.2, where the issue isn't there (we tried with a Mac on 10.10.2 where the issue wasn't there, we updated it, and the issue happened instantly)

Do you know if this is primarily a Wacom problem (related to THIS: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=9206" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) or is it an Apple Mac OS problem ?

Does the same problem happen in Photoshop ? (this is important ; the reason I ask is because if it happens in Photoshop we have a much better chance that Wacom and/or Apple will make fixing the problem a priority because of the huge user base of Photoshop ... but if it is just impacting apps like ArtRage, Gimp, TVPaint , I don't think they care if it is fixed sooner or much later. )

For this reason I continue to use Mac OS 10.9 . From reports I have read in different online forums 10.10 Yosemite seems to have been a long, on-going nightmare. The problem I foresee is new users who will have recently purchased a Mac computer which has the latest version of Yosemite installed ... they will likely have no option of easily 'downgrading' their OS to 10.9 or earlier version of 10.10.2 (at least not without some complicated hack that probably voids their warranty ?).

For TVPaint users who have purchased a new Mac with Yosemite 10.10.4 pre-installed or who have unknowingly updated to 10.10.4 before they knew about this problem , do you have any suggested instructions on how to go back to 10.10.2 or 10.9 ?

We have tried with different Wacom drivers versions, and the issue still happens, so I'd say that this is not related to the Wacom problem I mentionned a few days/weeks ago.

No, it's not present in Photoshop (at least not on my Mac).

You have no idea how right you are, and I hope that 10.11 El Capitan will not be the same...

I didn't see this part of the post earlier :

For users that purchased a new Mac with Yosemite 10.10.4 pre-installed, downgrading to 10.10.2 shouldn't cause a big issue.
I'd do the following :
  • Back-up your files !!!
  • Download the base Yosemite 10.10 installer from Apple's website or from the Apple Store (I think that from the Apple Store, it's the "base" version)
  • Download and install the 10.10.2 combo update directly from Apple's website : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1786" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There you go.

However, downgrading to 10.9, I'm not sure it would be doable without removing the warranty :?
In a global way, I would not advise to downgrade on a "lower" version of the OS the computer came with (i.e. don't downgrade to 10.9 if your Mac came with 10.10...). Also, sometimes, this may not be possible at all (my iMac came with 10.8, and it was impossible to install 10.6 for example, the installer would simply fail).

For users that updated to 10.10.4, either have a Time Machine back-up that was done before 10.10.2 (which was released in March 2015 if I remember well). That, or follow the same steps as described before.

As you know I'm a brand new user. Just discovered I do have this problem, if I'm on the dot setting as opposed to stroke. Stroke works fine both in full screen and not full screen. But dot setting drops as you demonstrated when not in full screen.

Just for your information, we are still waiting from Apple feedback regarding the annoying bug with Wacom since Mac OSX 10.10.4. We are harassing them once a week : still no help or even an answer.

Finally, some news ! (but not from Apple, let's be serious)

We discovered that the problem is very likely to appear if the tablet you are using does not have a screen.
Meaning that if you use an Intuos tablet, you will have the issue, and if you use a Cintiq, you will not have the issue. However, if the Cintiq is set to draw on another screen the issue will be there.

I have this issue when working on my Cintiq (yosemite and tvp 10.5). So this answer is not correct. I now always work in the 32 bit version because I don't like to work in full screen modus.
But good to know that you are still trying to fix this bug.

Thierry forgot to say we notice the behaviour was "fixed" with Capitan.

Actually, we have no answers from Wacom or Apple... :|

Thanks for the reply.

So you recommend to update to El Capitan?

No... No, no, I would not recommend anything regarding Capitan... Or at least, wait for next updates, because Capitan is terrible.

To be perfectly honest, I would recommand staying on Mavericks, because Yosemite is also terrible.
