Animated paper texture behind the pen.
Animated paper texture behind the pen.
I can't see anything about this after searching the forum. What I'd like to be able to do is have a cycle of 3+++ paper textures under the pen. Before TVPaint I'd do this in AE but I'd like to know if it's possible within TVP. The problem I have with the current set up is that the paper-under-pen texture stays the save as the line animates through the frames. This gives the impression that it's just multiplied onto a still image rather than being animated on individual sheets of paper*... does this make sense to anyone?
First post btw, HI THANKS HI!
* I know you'll never get 100000 textures in there but a cycle of many works great.

I put some 3 or 5 textures into an animated layer and loop it, then set this to mask and draw on a different layer. You can set the paper layer to invisible, it still works. Only problem is you can't easily adjust the paper's strength, so you have to test a percentage firs, then make it permanent within the layer by merging with white.

That's a shame it's not under that paper button. Would have made it useful for more than just illustration.

Use [Rendering > Inlay Texture FX] with an animated source.

Ah ha! So this will let me have boiling paper under my pencil line rather than a static one? I don't want a tracked texture either.
I'm slowly going through the documentation at the moment. So much in here.

it's an effect, so you apply it after you have animated shapes without textures.

I'm trying this method but it seems to me that the mask only responds to alpha and not luma - so I can't get my paper textures to affect the line. Is there anyway to luma matte?

Re: Animated paper texture behind the pen.
Use the scan cleaner on the textures?

Oooooh reeeeally? I shall try that in the morning. So the scan cleaner will give graduated alpha values to the image I assume?slowtiger wrote:Use the scan cleaner on the textures?

exactly, daninski wrote:Oooooh reeeeally? I shall try that in the morning. So the scan cleaner will give graduated alpha values to the image I assume?slowtiger wrote:Use the scan cleaner on the textures?
black => 100% opaque, white => 100% transparent, middle-grey => 50% opaque, ...
but take care to "flatten" the profile curve of the ScanCleaner effect before applying it,
otherwise you will get a little "distorsion" in the Luma>Alpha conversion.
Re: Animated paper texture behind the pen.
It would be a nice feature if you could do this under the paper tab for the pens. Any thick lines over a few frames show up the static paper which breaks the analogue illusion a little.

Re: Animated paper texture behind the pen.
I found a useful workaround to prevent a paper structure from remaining static over several frames.
1. Colour every 3rd image only with the paper of your choice.
2. Set paper angle to 120°.
3. Colour every image after the already coloured image.
4. Set paper angle to -120°.
5. Colour remaining images.
This works nicely for me on two's, but I only use a gray wash.

Re: Animated paper texture behind the pen.
Something else :
1) You apply flat colours on a layer
2) You add above a new layer and you apply a paper on - let's say - 5 instances. On each instance, you change the angle, size, whatever, so you have 5 different instances
3) Use "Loop" post-behaviour
4) Use a blending mode, such as erase, saturate or tint.
5) You'll get an animated paper
