Blender’s 2.5D toolset

Post by Sewie »

Have you seen this?
Pretty interesting 2.5D toolset and workflow. I can't help thinking that this (or something like it) will be were 2d handdrawn animation will be heading in the future. Not just the 2.5D but also the ease with which the drawings can be manipulated in multiple ways.

Interesting.

But you should try Poser.
It's more intuive and efficient on some points. I will try to find videos in my harddrive.

You mean this??
It's functional but there's no 2D design sensibility, or artistic expression of any kind in there.

there are options similar to the ones you have shown in your 1st anf 4th videos, but it's unfortunately not shown on the official videos, especially not in their latest version 11.

Poser is quite amazing, you can even create animate watercolors for years ! (couldn't believe it when I saw it)

If I have time to find and post the right videos, I will do it.

I'm curious to see a whole short film made using Blender 2.5D toolset.

I have played with blender for editing. For editing it was not easy to find tutorials, but I'm not complaining - it's free software. I didn't know about this hand drawn CG blend way of working. Is there documentation anywhere on how to get started?

After seeing this video a few month ago, I was really curious how it's done in blender

Unfortunately the animation with the grease pencil is really rudimenary and complicated to use (and I'm using blender since around 7 years)

But the top-video looks really interesting. It seems they reworked the grease pencil-system. I guess the brushes are still pretty unusable, but the technique aroung it makes me curious again. Thank you for posting this sewie.

Even if the outcome looks quite interesting, the pen-system in TVPaint is still a pain in the ass. There is a reason, why every 2D animation done in blender is only a few seconds in length.

Surely you meant "the pen system in Blender"?

Was it only a bad wording or do you discovered some similarities to a word out of the human anatomy?
However, the Grease Pencil system is great for what it was made for (writing notes and quickly sketching something), but if they really want to make it useable as real drawing tool A LOT of work needs to be done.

Blender has an original game engine kit like Unreal Engine / Stingray, so their 2.5D toolset will welcome for game developement marcket like "Live2D" spread in Asia : be the way of the Western Animation Style.
Spoiler : some Youtube movies including ANIME girl :

Uuuh, Live2D looks interesting.

Unfortunately the blender game engine didn't get much attention from the developers in the last few years. The last time they worked on it it was impressive, but the other game-engines, especially unity passed by and today not many game developers use blender, as far as I know.
In their roadmap is written, that they'll focus more on the game engine in the future, but this will be a lot of work too.

I'm not that impressed. This is nothing new. Sure you can do it in a free program, but it is nothing new.

I already work with Cinema 4D and TVP:
1. I create TVP Animations and artwork with an alpha channel
2. I create planes in C4D, and put the TVP artwork onto 3D planes as materials
3. If I need to add effects or animation, I can do it in C4D. Or...
4.I can render the C4D images, bring them into TVP and add effects or anything else.

So sure, Blender is free and people are being clever with it. But they are not doing anything with grease pencil that has not already been done in TVP or Harmony or The Tab or other
2D paint programs.

What I would like to see is a tool that lets you model 3D geometry that is based on drawing. You draw something from 2 or 3 angles, and the computer builds the geometry with UV layer for you. Yes, some 3D modeling programs allow you to use pen like tools, but there is nothing out there that is truly like what I am describing. Modeling is still all about pushing points around and welding faces together. Modeling tools based on sculpting are nice, but they not based on drawing either.

Now that 3D graphics have conquered physics, particle systems, hair, crowd scenes and a lot of other challenges, it would be nice to see some real breakthrough in modeling and lighting.
