locating and saving individual user configs on a Windows PC
I need to know how to locate and save (to a flash drive) an individual user's TVPaint settings (configuration) with TVPaint running on Windows .
(I am a Mac user , I don't know Windows at all . When I have to use a Windows computer I feel like I am in an upside down bizarro world where every task is more difficult and unnecessarily convoluted).
At the school where I teach the animation lab has TVPaint running on a network of Windows PC's. Apparently the students haven't been shown how properly to create and save their own configurations to a USB flash drive , so they can always load their own configuration from the Start-Up Panel . When I was on-campus recently I tried to help one of the lab technicians to show him how to do this , but could not find out how to locate the configurations on a Windows PC.
On Mac the individual user's configurations are located in a folder in Library/TVPaint Animation Pro/ which shows the default configuration folder and any other configurations that have been created. So it's easy to drag and drop the configuration you want to copy over to a flash drive.
On Windows in Documents and Settings/User name/Application Data/ TVPaint Animation Pro I could only find the "default" configuration folder, but none of the other configurations I created . So I could not locate a custom configuration and copy it to a flash drive . Where are the configurations other than the "default" configuration located ? On the Windows PC at the school I searched for the names of the new configs and could not find them. (for example , I created a new config called David Test 2 , but then searching for "David Test 2" on the hard drive turned up nothing. So, where does it go ? I could see it in the list of available configs in the Start-Up panel and could load it , but when I look for it on the hard drive I can't find it to copy it over to a flash drive .)

The answer is in the FAQs
Oops, and I realize some information are missing, and it's still written TVPaint 10Will an update wreck my TVPaint Animation settings? Is there some way I can back up my settings ?
Although it is highly unlikely that updates will affect your settings, it's always good to err on the side of caution.
You can find your profile settings in the following directories, in case you wish to archive or distribute them:
• Windows: open "Documents and Settings" => "User name" => "Application Data" (or "AppData" on Vista , 7 [and 8]) [=> roaming] => "TVPaint Animation 10 Pro" and copy the folder "Default".
• Mac: open the "Library" => "tvp animation 10 pro" => and copy the folder "Default".
Be careful : since Lion (10.7), Library is hidden : you must use the menu "Go to" in the Finder, then press [Alt] on your keyboard to display the Library.
For Maverick [& Yosemite] users : Library is accessible from your user's folder (or you can use the trick above).
• Ubuntu : open the folder "Documents" hit [ctrl + H] in order to display the hidden folders. Double click on the folder ".tvp", then "TVPaint Animation 10 Pro" and copy the folder "Default"
You can simply overwrite those "Default Settings" with any backups you've saved.

But in this case the student does not want to copy the "Default" configuration , they want to copy their custom configuration.Elodie wrote:The answer is in the FAQs

On Windows in Documents and Settings/User Name/Application Data/TVPaint Animation Pro there is only the Default configuration folder , nothing else , so how can they simply overwrite the "Default" settings with any backups they have saved if they can not see where to locate the backup settings to have saved them in the first place ?

Re: locating and saving individual user configs on a Windows
Default folder automatically saves your config each time you close TVPaint properly. But in this case the student does not want to copy the "Default" configuration , they want to copy their custom configuration.
Except if your student has manually decided to create a new config folder, "Default" actually is his / her custom config.
If your student has created a new config folder through the startup panel, then (s)he will find an additional folder, with the name of his / her config at the root of "tvp animation 11 (pro)".
AppData / Roaming / tvp animation 11 (pro) is the only place where you can find your config folder(s). They are not saved somewhere else.

Re: locating and saving individual user configs on a Windows
Yes , that is precisely the case : a new config was created through the Start Up panel , but then we could not find the additional folder in the TVPaint Animation 10 Pro folder in Documents and Settings/User Name/Application Data/tvp animation 10 pro to copy it to the student's USB flash drive.Elodie wrote: If your student has created a new config folder through the startup panel, then (s)he will find an additional folder, with the name of his / her config at the root of "tvp animation 11 (pro)".
I'm trying to find the Windows equivalent to the screen shot I posted above showing the tvp animation pro folder on a Mac where the different configuration folders in addition to "default" config. are visible and can be easily copied over to the user's USB flash drive.

Re: locating and saving individual user configs on a Windows
Is this the same in TVPaint 10.5 running on Windows 7 ? On the school computers they still have TVPaint 10.5 and have not yet updated to TVPaint 11.Elodie wrote:Default folder automatically saves your config each time you close TVPaint properly. But in this case the student does not want to copy the "Default" configuration , they want to copy their custom configuration.

I did not see AppData/Roaming/tvp animation 10 pro . ( Roaming was not a folder I saw when we were looking.).
Would it be possible to post some screen shots showing how to locate the additional configuration folders that are created through the Start Up panel ? (I am no longer at the school , so I am at a disadvantage because I am not sitting in front of a Windows PC )
Just to clarify: this issue I am inquiring about is not concerning an individual student using TVPaint on their own computer . This is concerning multiple students using the NETWORKED license of TVPaint 10.5.7 on the school computers , running Windows 7 . Each student who opens this networked TVPaint license sees only the "default" straight-out-of-the-box version of TVPaint. They need to be able to create and save their own custom configurations through the Start Up panel and then be able to copy their custom config folder over to their own USB flash drive so they can work on various computers in the lab (since they are not assigned to the same computer workstation every day at the school). If they have their own custom config stored on their USB flash drive they can always open it from the Start Up panel, no matter what computer they are on. Can you please show me a screen shot of AppData/Roaming/tvp animation 10 pro folder on Windows which shows the additional config folders alongside of the default config folder ? Because when I searched the Windows PC I was using at the school there is only the default config folder visible , but none of the other new configs I created were visible ...

Re: locating and saving individual user configs on a Windows
If you open the startup panel, click on 'New', a new configuration (with the given name) directory is created in the configurations directory (C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Roaming\tvp animation 10 pro beta)
I'm on Win7 too

Re: locating and saving individual user configs on a Windows
Thank you, Mike, that screen shot helps.
For some strange reason when I was trying this last week at the school (using the Windows PC) whenever I created a new config via the Start Up panel it did not show up in the search. Would this have anything to do with the version of TVPaint on the school's computer's being a Networked version ? There are no individual user accounts or user names ... the only two available log-ins for the Windows PC's in the lab are "Student" and "Admin" .

Re: locating and saving individual user configs on a Windows
You can also check in the startup panel, when you click on the configuration popup, you should have on entry 'change directory'.
Click on it, and in the directory selector request, at the top, you can see the directory where all the configurations are stored.
If there is only one account for all users, maybe they is some right/permission problems/restrictions on the APPData directory ?

I'll have the lab technicians check it out . Thank you for those suggestions.Mike wrote:You can also check in the startup panel, when you click on the configuration popup, you should have on entry 'change directory'.

Re: locating and saving individual user configs on a Windows
Are the contents of the Mac and Windows folder for TVPaint config settings interchangeable?
I will soon be working on a Mac with TVP and I'm planning to bring my Windows "default" config folder with me. Can I just copy it into the Mac folder to have my settings the same as I have them in Windows?
It'd be great if that worked!

Thank you, Elodie!
So if I take my dongle, lock/unlock codes with me I can work on the mac that the studio provides me for the day?
Is there anywhere I can download the Mac version of TVP? The download page for the trial version wants me to fill in a questionnaire first. Also I don't know if they'll provide me with a 32b or 64b Mac version so I was thinking of downloading both, just in case.
