TVP, Android, Tablet Options

Post by dgrantham »

In addition to the PC version, I've been using TVP on a Galaxy Note 10.1 (version 1) running Android 4.0.4. The tablet's falling apart so I need something else.

1st choice appears to be getting a good condition used (they're not available new anymore) Note Pro 12.2. Good resolution, Big Screen, good battery life, good brightness . But it runs Android 4.4.4 and I don't know if that means TVP Android version will run on it.

The reason for portability (and the brightness factor) is that I like to sit on a shorw and do animated paintings of waves and streams.

The 1.2 is the brightest. If I were to go for cintiq at some point I'd a) rather have a big screen attached to a powerful computer than spend so much on one of the companion options and b) not have it linked to an eventually-obsolete processor.

thoughts welcome.

A bit more research and I see that the GUI renders too small to work with on the Note Pro 12.2's 2560 x1600. (There's a developper-level programming hack to reduce it to 1920 x 1200 but it requires a pc attached, and I think that's too much to get into, and it still might render too small.)

So I am wondering what tablets and OS versions folks are having success with.

Maybe I should replace my failing first-version 10.1 with a used one of the same; aparrently at 411/cd/m2 it's the brightest of all (and still too dim for outdoor work on sunny days) and I know how TVP works on its 1280 x 800 display.

The companion hybrid (would have to find a resale version) is only 210 cd/m2. (The companion 2 is only 150 cd.m2!) LIkely too dim for me.

The upcoming (just announced) Tab A w sPen doesn't yet have a brightness spec published, but it's only 1024 x 768, which, cheap though it the unit is, seems a little coarse.

thoughts?

thankyou.

I don't know if this is possible in the android version, but you can set the resolution of the TVPaint GUI to double size. I tried it on my Cintiq Companion 2, which has the same resolution. Unfortunately for me it was slightly too big, so I changed the resolution to 1920x1080, but maybe it fits your needs.

"Resolution scaling (in Preferences > Interface) allows you to increase your interface resolution up to three times the size. This option is especially useful for Android users."

Thanks folks. Do we know how TVP gets along with the varying Android OS versions?

Is anyone having success on a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2" Tablet, or Android OS 4.4? I have a used Pro on hold to buy if I can get some assurance that TVpaint will run on it...

At this point I haven't been able to find anyone who is using it.

I understand that there's resolution scaling available, but it isn't in preferences>Interface of either my PC or Android versions of TVP10. (I'm not sure if I can get an Android version of 11.)

I think I will promote this question to its own subject heading, maybe in a different category.

I'm currently running tvpaint 11 on a cintiq hybrid and it is the closest thing to (if not) desktop software. My only minor gripes are the touch is a little wonky, for instance when trying to resize the canvas with touch, if the digitizer is still detected by the screen, you will end up with your fingers creating brush strokes. The other thing is the Android version is limited to the standard version of tvpaint (due to hardware limitations I would imagine) so you don't get the layer blending modes. But like I said tvpaint runs incredibly stable on my hybrid and really displays the possibilities when a developer creates an app without dumbing it down for tablets. Before I purchased tvpaint I tried out a demo version available on the tvpaint website, I would suggest downloading it and giving it a try to see how it runs in your tablet.

Thanks, Bokenomics. The demo seems to work alright on the Note Pro (Android 5.0.X). Can you tell me what OS you are usingon your hybrid?
