Brandnew superfast computer not fast enough?

Post by Griet Bertels »

Hello,

We are using TVPaint 11 Pro 64bit edition since a while now. We used TVPaint 10 before 32 bit. and for some actions the computer simply was not keeping up with whatever we were doing in TVPaint.

So we bought this brandnew PC, Intel Xeon E 1650 V3 12 Core @ 3,5 GHz, 32 GB RAM, Brand is Dell, researched it online, model is recommended for graphical processing, beyond what we are doing. OS is windows 10 all 64 bit; put TVPaint 11 on it also 64 bit.

The performance in general is good, but not always and not WAW either. Especially when we make a backgound filling out the page with a paper type, then the machine chokes. First All cores go to 100% thta takes about a minute, and then the Harddisk gets the load, choking to also for about a minute. One would expect we would then have a huge file maybe, but instead it turns out the entire drawing only takes about 4 MB.

Help would surely be appreciated, we may be doing somemthing wrong but at this point we just can't get a grip on it

I've also using a pretty fast computer, but TVPaint doesn't seem to use it's hardware much. It's only slightly faster than on my MacbookPro from 2008.

That's a good way to put it. I think it is amazing that TVP runs that good on a 10 yr old Macbook or Mac Pro with only 8 BG RAM, but that shouldn't prevent it to be even faster on a recent machine.

(But seems to happen to other software too. AnimeStudio on my new Mac Pro 12 core still uses only 4 cores to render.)

We also have a 12 Core Mac Pro computer in the office : TVPaint is really fast and uses all cores.

Don't get me wrong it's fast to work with and I notice a big difference between my "new"computer and my old MacBook when it comes to rendering the preview while working, but exporting or applying squiggles (?) to a lot of frames on a CTG layer seems both pretty slow for the simplicity of the task.

In fact, CTG and exporting are both everything but simple tasks.

Sorry, I guess I underestimated the complexity behind it. I only have After Effects for comparison and it seems it's a lot faster in exporting PNGs from images without any effects applied, but maybe it's just a wrong impression.

Do you have the same issue with TVPaint 11 - 32 bits ?

the file size seems ok to me.

In reply to all your posts :-) :
- The project has dimensions of approx 7000 * 5000 Pixels and the rendering size is set pretty small, the entire project is only 2 or 3 layers and just the one frame; my wife uses TVPaint to make still drawings, not animated movies.

Do any of you experience these timeouts in same or similar actions?
We are trying to understand if this a)hardware not strong enough or b) a reality check where this or similar actions do indeed charge the system for a while and you need to wait...

we don't have these time out.

can you share your file with us ?
also, maybe can you record yourself while using the software ?
That could help to see what is wrong.

Hello,

It took us a while with the rush for end of year to get back to you, we have run a small test using a recording the fill paper function on a 7000*5000 canvas and then subsequently on a 1280*1024 canvas. The difference is enormous.

7000*5000 takes a while, even up to an estimated 90 seconds to complete, while the same action on a 1280*1024 canvas takes only one or 2 seconds to complete

You can find both canvasses and the movie attached to this mail for referencing.

I guess our question now changes to: Is it really necessary to use such a big canvas? We do it to anticipate a question of our customers wanting to apply an image on a larger scale than originally conceived and avoiding having to redraw on a larger canvas afterwards. So the question becomes: How do you guys do this? and can you maintain quality another way starting out from a smaller canvas?

Kind regards,

In the large project, a fill of the whole page with a tiled brush takes 5 seconds. That's fast enough for me.

Lower "Gap closer" value in the tool panel : that's why it's slow (it must equal to 0).
