i'm trying to work on from an external hd and when i try to save an error message says "can't create file". anyone know what's going on?
(i can save a test file from my local hd fine.) seems to be related to a new (and accidental) installation of sierra; the same files that can't be saved are the same ones sierra keeps asking me for authentication when i want to alter them... arghh!

Permissions issue perhaps ? I think I had this happen once a while ago and running Repair Permissions with Disk First Aid fixed it.
Now with Sierra they don't have repair permissions option in Disk First Aid, but I believe you can still run it from Terminal.

yes, i think you're on to something. i have a call into apple care right now. not sure how to do it in the terminal, and last night, in the midst of this ongoing sierra catastrophe, i noticed repair permissions was 'now automatic and unnecessary'. ohhh reeeally...
i'm in the process of erasing and reinstalling el capitan; let's hope the dominoes stop falling.

I see you are working on Mac OS, which requires hard drive to be in Fat32. You can read documents from an external driver in NTFS, but you cannot write on it. This might be the origin of your problem.
