I also come from the old school of xSheets, but already for long time found them totally useless in digital production. They are still used in paper production of course.
The only thing I miss sometimes in TVPaint is ability to keep a stack of source frames without the need to reapply them each time when a change is made to one of them. In programs that used xSheets, like CTP, a frame could be repeated and placed anywhere in the xSheet without it being turned into a new independent frame... it becomes quite important when working on bigger projects with lot's of people in the process, and passing animation to cleanup, inbetweening, or color department becomes a problem, if cycles or repetitions are not communicated correctly. so now we have to write notes directly in the file to make things clear...

SO - i figured out how to apply a change to one images across the exposure. I found the button: Apply the current image on the instances with the same name.

And you can just use the Cutbrush tool to just copy paste mouths or any other shapes to any other frame...

Thanks Soom. Yeah, im still exploring and everyone has been so helpful. Change is so hard sometimes, but necessary. I can see how TVPaint can speed up production, but I just need to figure out my flow from my years of old school style productions.

Just treat the timeline, as a horizontal xsheet - it's really easy

For the longest time I felt the same way about missing the vertical X-sheet format . I come from traditional animation and also had previously worked with Animo (I still think the vertical X-sheet in Animo was great !) , but in the past few years of working with TVPaint I find that I don't really miss the vertical X-sheet format anymore. I agree with Soom - the horizontal timeline in TVPaint is so versatile now for moving images around and retiming images , that I don't find it a limitation . Of course TVPaint has the vertical X-sheet format as well , but surprisingly I find that I don't use it very often.

Hi all,
Is there a way to import a jpg, then update / replace that same jpg later? For example, i put a rough background sketch in and later i want to replace it with the colored / clean version???
Thanks,
Johnnyg

I do this using an NLE (editing program). I edit my films in Vegas from storyboard stage, through animatic stage and pencil test and all the way through to finished film with color and a soundtrack. Every time I export an AVI of some work in progress, it updates whatever the last version of the AVI was in Vegas. In the opposite direction, I build my sound tracks in Vegas and import them into TVP so that I can animate to sound. Each time my composer makes a change to the music, I carry that change from Vegas to TVP.

Hey Paul, I completely understand. Thats the way I work as well, but im wondering if TVPaint has that same functionality of replacing or updating an imported image. Do you know of a way to do that same concept in TVP?

It's a strange concept/question, because you create the picture in TVP, don't you? Or if not, where would it be updated from?

It's the concept of linked files, as opposed to "store bitmaps within the TVP file format". TVP doesn't do that. (When I need this, I use AS.)

I understand, but why? Is it when you make your frames in another software?

I responded before and I dont see my post. Yikes. Anyhow ... hopefully this one posts. I subcontract oit background artists who only have photshop... so they do a rough sketch.. I animate ontop... they clean and paint it. I then replace the rough.
Is that a strange technique?

(AS = Anime Studio.)
Paul: I often need to update single bitmaps which are already animated (cut-out stuff). For this task a linked file to a software like AS, Flash, or AFX is a time-saver. I also do some colour corrections this way since I don't have a dedicated compositing program.
It really depends on the task. Sometimes I need this kind of flexibility, because I need to work in a hurry and improvise a lot and may later notice that parts don't really fit. Sometimes, when the job allows me more planning and the client can't change their mind later, I don't need it.
Johnny: not strange, only not optimal. I found TVP superior to Photoshop in all tasks of animation.

Link?... you can bring in a tvp file into after fx?

Of course not. But I can render layers separately. AFX can only handle rendered bitmaps.
