Yes you may be right.
In the first 4 months we dealt with script, graphic design, storyboard, animatic, colorscript, actors research, voices recording, premix…
So we started animation/cleaning/coloring/compositing on the 5th month.
Of course it can't be a professional productivity, because it's a school project and i think you'll understand that we wanted to take our time and do it well.

I am interested in addition to the principals of how to teach animation and have had discussions on the subject with animation instructors from all around the globe. Your excellent film gave me the opportunity to learn something of the student perspective.

I, for instance, am a proponent of focusing on the teaching of solo (indie) production rather than group production only because it is a more realistic thus useful preparation into the future. One year I went as far as giving all the students the same story and music track to animate for their finals and not to my surprise, ran into huge opposition from most of the students. When I described this to other colleagues they criticized me along the student line as well: Animation is a team effort and how better to prepare students for real life productions but creating a team effort.

This sounds good but the opportunities to become a member of a professional team after graduation are getting slimmer by the year. The opportunities to create your own job online are already there and will get stronger by the year. But even working solo will in the beginning require a post graduate to be disciplined enough to follow directions, which my method teaches them. I was certainly a lot less popular in class than my colleagues but teachers are there to prepare students for true life circumstances and not to win popularity contests and win tenure.

For what it's worth Paul, I agree with you. Better to teach students how to do everything. That way, if they ever are in a collaborative situation, they know what each step in the process entails. As a film maker, I learned how to operate the camera, lighting, audio recording, directing and acting, even some graphic rudiments. I am better off for it.
