Export as PSD - conflict with Photoshop CC 2019 ?

I just noticed a problem when exporting a TVPaint project (all Layers and Frames) as a PSD file , trying to open the exported PSD file
in Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 it gives an error message:
"Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."

I would say this is a high-priority issue to fix , since many productions move artwork back and forth between TVPaint and Photoshop .

UPDATE: This isn't a TVPaint issue, but is a Photoshop issue. PSD files have a limit of 2 GB. See below.

Here is a little update on this issue.
A colleague messaged me:
"Yes-- I got the same error message... but it's because the file size is too large to open in Photoshop . When I downscaled it in TVPaint first , it opened fine in PS."
So , that's very interesting. I did not realize that Photoshop had trouble opening a file that large (2.84 GB) . That’s odd . I’m routinely opening 6 GB files in TVPaint. They can be a bit laggy , but they do open and I can work on them. It is odd that the error message from Photoshop implies that it is the file itself that is
"not compatible with this version of Photoshop” , implying that the file would work with a different version of Photoshop (?) … when in fact the error message should be saying:
“The file size is too large to be opened in Photoshop.”
So this may not be a TVPaint issue , it seems to be a Photoshop issue. I'll confirm it on my end (I'm not at my work computer right now as I'm posting this) .

What are the dimensions of the file?

The TVPaint project size is 4096 x 3072 , 7 layers, 185 frames , export via Clip: Layers Structure , all Layers and Frames , as .PSD .
Resulting .PSD file is 2.84 GB (the .tvpp file was 1.79 GB). The 2.84 GB .PSD file won't open in Photoshop. Photoshop says:
"Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop." but in fact it is the size that is the problem.
When I downscale the TVP project size to 1920 x 1440 , export via Clip: Layers Structure , all Layers and Frames , as .PSD , then the resulting
.PSD file is 944 MB and will open in Photoshop. But now this seems to me to be a Photoshop issue handling the larger file size , not a TVPaint issue exporting to .PSD .

I created a project the same size and exported the same way as you, then tried to open the PSD file in Photoshop CS5 (extended) and got the exactly same error message. A smaller, HDTV sized PSD opened without problem.
I found some 5 yr old discussion here
https://feedback.photoshop.com/photosho ... _file_size which said:
PSB files work up to around 4 Exabytes, and we can't go beyond that without changing the OS file APIs to allow more then 64 bits for the file size and position.
PSD files are limited to 2 Gig because of the file format design and compatibility with other applications. That really cannot be changed. That's why we created the PSB format, to allow for much larger files (in pixel dimension and total file size).
So a solution would be to enable TVP to export in PSB format. From here
https://www.adobe.com/devnet-apps/photo ... 7409_72092 I assume the specifications are open, but I don't know about possible licensing troubles.

Thanks for the report David and slowtiger !
I had no idea that PSD files were limited to 2Gb
I guess we'll have to look into the PSB format at some point.
