Improve Japanese Workflow Autopaint Light and Shadow Areas

Post by Jet »

I was happy when TVPaint released the include borders function and the accompanying effects to help with the PaintMan workflow. There is a discussion at OpenToonz GitHub about automating the painting of the light and shadow fills, not just the lines themselves but the fills, when a default tone is put down by the user the computer fills in the light and shadow areas next to it with red and blue lines automatically, that would be very interesting to try out.

You can read here...

Attack on Titan was used as a breakdown however so perhaps it is meant to paint more complicated drawings after all (AoT no longer used as example), I know Hironori Takagi from Wit Studio is here (hello), perhaps if you read this do you think it would speed up the painting process at all?

It might be interesting if TVPaint experimented with it sometime in the future.

Thank you for the useful information.

TVPaint has Line Colors Enhanced FX, which processes fill lines at a time.
But it is not understood that fill lines have functions other than normal color / shadow color / highlight (such as white-eye and skin boundaries, etc.).
It is not perfect because it has been I think that the contents discussed in OpenToonz's GitHub are also missing.
However, I think that it is useful as a start of discussion.
(By the way, I belong to WIT STUDIO but I have not participated in the Attack on Titan, so I can not talk about anything about the work.)

Ah, forgive me for assuming about Attack on Titan! I see what you mean about Line Colorize Enhanced.

It seems the post has been edited on GitHub and there is a new example posted, the premise now looks a lot simpler, probably worth re-reading. I will post the examples from the GitHub page below in-case it gets edited again otherwise this thread will make no sense.

I just posted a few days ago about what FX the Line Colors Enhanced does.
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=12604#p114437

TVPaint has a method to paint the lines later, but the Japanese coloring staff who mainly use PaintMan are used to paint the lines at the same time as the fill.

So I think it's a worthwhile try when it comes to coloring all three tones with one click, as introduced on GitHub.

Just a heads up but it looks like CELSYS have been issued a patent for this last month, was pointed out on GitHub yesterday but here's the link.

The Patent seems vector base. Seems like you can accomplish it with vectors.

If this is patent and it's not vector. Is it based on A.I.? If not. TVPaint can always go A.I. Check https://waifulabs.com/ it generated images, but you can change it into alot of different colors. I think doing the A.I. way seems better.
