Every time I try and save as a new updated file TV Paint will just freeze on the save page and I have to force quit.
Using Mac OS Catalina. Any suggestions?
Thanks

It may be the system dialog box that freezes and not TVPaint. Go to Preferences -> Interface and change the File Requester from "System" to "TVPaint Animation", to see if it helps.

Do you save on a network drive ?

Thanks a lot for your help. It works for now so I will use it in the future. I think it was the dialogue box that was freezing.

Weird. Be careful: this could indicate that you have something to fix with your filesystem, at the OS level.

Hi
I've experienced this same issue - but intermittently.
I've fixed the issue for me by doing the recommended file requester change, but I'm wondering that, given that several people have started experiencing this, if it is more than a coincidence, and perhaps it has something to do with the TVPaint 11.5 release - in combination with certain operating system versions and/or hardware (rather than a problem with the filesystem at the OS level - I have not have any problems saving or 'saving as' in other software).
Obviously, if everyone who has this issue comments here, that would draw more attention to this, and help identify where the issue may actually be. (I'm interested to see that slowstart is using MacOS Catalina - as am I.)
Thanks
John

The system file requester uses the system functions (MacOS API) to select a path. Whereas the TVPaint file requester relies only on the TVPaint internal functions.
Since there is no such crash when using the TVPaint file requester, we can only assume that it's related to a system defect.

In addition we could not reproduce it on the Mac computers we have at TVPaint, so it's difficult to debug...

From my personnal experience, I would suspect that your Mac is looking for a network destination that does not exist.

No, tt's definitely not related to the 11.5 release. It has been reported before on the 11.0.10 : viewtopic.php?f=10&t=13405&p=120009

You stick to the 64-bit version, do you ?

I agree that this bug is very annoying, but also very specific. Before we can do anything we need to understand the successive steps (or conditions) to reproduce it.
If you use the 32 bit version, please don't. We cannot exclude the fact that the maximum addressable amount of memory may be reached by the 32bits version when saving. All the data are like "flattenened" at savetime so that's the moment when the memory usage peaks. Though, given the issue is solved when using the internal file requester, it should not be that.

Hi Xavier

Thanks for your prompt feedback and explanations.

Some notes (in case they are of any use):
1) It is just the 64 bit version that I use.
2) I don't use a network drive, and in fact it is just the same folder in use - sometimes the 'save as' works, sometimes not. All I'm doing in the renaming is going through the alphabet for the final character of the file name to create my own set of versions of the file. So that aspect is pretty consistent.
3) My folder name happens to have a '.' (dot) in it - but that shouldn't be a factor...
4) The file in question is only half a dozen layers (most of those with just the first frame used and on 'hold') and a couple of hundred frames. At 24fps and animated on ones it is just a dozen or so seconds long. The saved compressed file size is currently tiny (to my mind) at just 12.7MB
5) I do work with a 2047MB undo size - which is larger than some - but then I also have plenty of memory installed
6) I have TVPP Compression ticked.
7) I have had no problems with saves at all - it has only been the 'save as'. And that has been perhaps 20% to 30% of the time resulting in freezes - certainly enough for me to pause for reflection!
8) The rename is usually immediately preceded by a save - I don't know if the pattern of crashes is related to that or not...
9) My system and TVPaint details in my signature are accurately up-to-date.
10) For now, I'm on the TVPaint file handler. When I go back to the system file requestor, I'll be sure to note really carefully what does and doesn't cause the freezes on 'save as'. I'm kind of curious about it now, but am also aware that you have provided what - so far (not used that much yet) - is a simple and effective work-around.

I want to end by saying how much I appreciate TVPaint - the software and the support. I'm loving having more time than usual to be doing more in TVPaint and learning more. Google searches for things I want to work out how to do are fantastically successful in pointing to really useful content - either on the forum (what a great resource), or in TVPaint's own documentation.

Thanks again
John
